Format: DVD
Although very old by 2009, Gore Vidal has lost little of his "Vidality" and pulls off a strong performance in this casual chat before an educated and sympathetic audience at 92Y in New York City. His literary executor and friend has a competent and professional style, getting just the right kinds of responses from his subject. The only signs of aging betrayed by Vidal are his occasional inability to remember a few names that might appear in a game of Trivial Pursuit but otherwise are seldom discussed, such as President Polk, and longer than average pauses between sentences. Vidal has clearly prepared for this speech. Most of his stories have that note of perfection, characteristic of Vidal's writing, indicating they have been told a hundred times before. Vidal is a consummate performer and makes each one just as fresh as the first time it was told. His speech has the same flourishes and witty asides that one finds in his writing. Among novelists, Vidal was probably the greatest speaker in our time, and it shows here.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the old man's stories about bygone times and celebrities. Witty, insightful, and good, Gore Vidal understood a great many things about a great many subjects. He had a firm grasp of the obvious and little patience with fools. His essays and historical novels are indispensable to an understanding of culture and history.
