Editorial Reviews

Nearly nine years ago Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek began bonding over their shared passion for the seemingly disparate spheres of bubbling Detroit techno, soul and fierce Jamaican digital dancehall. By pure coincidence, the two found themselves living in Australia, and that connection was cemented by the forming of Africa Hitech, the moniker which represents both Steve and Mark's love for all things progressive within music, whilst acknowledging that the roots of much of today's popular music can be traced directly back to Africa. Their first full length project for Warp is titled 93 Million Miles. 93 Million Miles is an unflinchingly ambitious product of international globe-trotting that carves a new faultline into the rapidly expanding terrain of ''bass music'' or whatever it's being called this week.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Africa HiTech's debut, 93 MILLION MILES, is pretty awesome, considering that it's yet another project from Mark Pritchard (of Global Communication fame), this time collaborating with Steve White (of Spacek fame). The title track is dreamy but has a sharp Detroitian edge to it, speeding up and slowing down for rhythmic interest. The dubstep hints in "Do U Wanna Fight" give it a thrilling texture, while "Out In The Streets" merges a laser battle with a vocal reggae sample. And while "Glangslap" has a deepness to it that belies its higher tones, "Our Luv" slowly thrums its way into your consciousness. "Spirit" brings in the African rhythms, and "Light the Way" has a smooth dubstep soul in its urgency. "Cyclic Sun" as a free jazz energy to it, and "Don't Fight It" closes up the album on a slower, deeper note that has a plaintive feel. A strong showing.

Great item for my collection. But I was expecting to see more beautiful graphics in an envelope ). Nevertheless, great music.

Definitely a choice worthy of consideration.
But because of the way these guys look at the Dub step genre,
not every dub fan will like this album. It's got more of a progressive feel to it,
with heavy trance, psych, and spiritual nods infused throughout. Don't know
much about Africa Hitech but I just grabbed an old podcast of theirs from a while back so,
they've been around. Great post-production as well.
