4.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Weil's new electric tea kettle
Although the kettle is quite pricy, heavier than I would have expected, has a plastic lid and is hard to clean (you can't put your hand inside, for wiping or cleaning...), it is still the best glass/stainless steel electric tea kettle available on the market. I had to return several others with bad plastic-smell (while boiling), or plastic-inside-parts. But this one, so...

This arrived today and although I haven't even plugged it in, I am already disappointed. The main problem is that the boiling water obviously will come in contact with a plastic component. I chose this kettle to avoid boiling water in plastic! The other thing that bothers me is that the product description makes it seem like it was made in Switzerland, but it was actually made in China. I am returning this. I regret spending so much money on it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing healthy about it., January 18, 2008
This review is from: Dr. Weil 9805 The Healthy Kitchen 1-3/4-Quart 1500-Watt Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
"The Healthy Kitchen brand of high performance kitchen appliances is an authentic cooking brand conducive to healthy living. Manufactured by Spring Switzerland."
Yeah, right!

First of all, I was buying this kettle for its steel and glass body, no plastic. This is supposed to be healthy combination.
I was wrong. The water from the kettle smelled plastic even after more then 10 times of boiling fresh water in it. Plastic lid and black plastic thing inside the kettle was causing it.

Now, read description of the kettle and not just look at the picture and assume it's glass. No it's not. It's clear PLASTIC, not glass. Surprise!
How do I know? Try to knock on "glass" body and compare sound to how real glass sound like. But even this test was not good enough for me. After looking closely, I found that handle is attached to "glass" body with screws. How you ask? Because it's just a plastic!

Don't buy it if you are expecting healthy water out of this kettle.

Did I mention that it is "Manufactured by Spring Switzerland"? On the box from my kettle it has print "Manufactured in PRC". Cool, at least no in China. Oops! PRC is a fancy acronym for "People's Republic of China".
It is made in China! What's wrong with it? Well, I don't think Chine has same standards and requirements and US does. This means, that the plastic smell of water could be because they use wrong type of plastic.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware of this misleading product!, March 18, 2008
This review is from: Dr. Weil 9805 The Healthy Kitchen 1-3/4-Quart 1500-Watt Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
What a disappointment to see Dr Weil - who I have always respected as a health authority - put his name on such an inferior and misleading product as this. First of all, as another reviewer mentioned already, this product IS made in China, NOT Switzerland, as the name "Spring Switzerland" clearly was meant to imply! Secondly, the "transparent body" of this kettle is made out of Lexan - a plastic - and not glass. It is NOT healthy for boiling water to be in contact with any kind of plastic, especially a plastic made in China that could have all sorts of impurities in it! China is notorious for a lack of quality control and oversight of the manufacturers throughout its country. The fact that Dr Weil saw fit to put his name on a product that opted for using such inferior material and using the misleading manufacturer name of Spring Switzerland is very disheartening. If he is capable of doing this, what other corners has he cut on all his other products - especially his supplements? Are these made in China? Do they really have the amount of nutrients in them that are claimed? Do they have impurities in them? I am really disappointed to see that Dr Weil is willing to engage in such misleading advertising in order to make a buck.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Weil needs to re-look this kitchen item., July 10, 2008
This review is from: Dr. Weil 9805 The Healthy Kitchen 1-3/4-Quart 1500-Watt Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
I, too, bought this kettle thinking it was glass, only to find out it was plastic. Buy my biggest beef is, I can't hold onto it! The handle is too thick and the problem is compounded by the fact the handle is open-ended. I have carpal tunnel in my right hand and it's just too painful trying to hold onto this thing and pour. I can't imagine anyone with arthritis being able to use this pot comfortably either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Kettle Boils Water in 60 Seconds, December 6, 2009
By
Charles Zeng "JW" (Central New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dr. Weil 9805 The Healthy Kitchen 1-3/4-Quart 1500-Watt Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
This kettle is amazing. It boils water very quickly in less than 60 seconds. I use it on my breaks to make tea and hot chocolate between work. It works so well that I brought several for my relative as gift and they are extremely happy with it. Because it heats so fast, I also use it to boil the hot water for preparation to cook pasta.

It has 360 degree rotation cord and automatic shut off so I don't need to turn it on or off. The glass carafe and stainless steel body is very easy to clean and there is no plastic smell after two weeks. After using it for a long while, some water deposit shows up. I just add water, and let it boil. Take it out, add a cup of vinegar and let it sit for an hour. Then rinse out and add fresh water to boil. After that all the deposit are gone and clean as new.

It also has a wide base and easy to grip handle. The body is made of glass and not of plastic as other reviewer described.

It also has a attached plastic lid at top with wired filter. This lid must be closed to make auto shut off work.

The glass carafe body is wrapped around with stainless steel at bottom. The flat heating element is also stainless steel. It has a plastic heat sensor at the top of the pot that never touch the water.

1.0 out of 5 stars Plastic and Poorly Made, November 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Dr. Weil 9805 The Healthy Kitchen 1-3/4-Quart 1500-Watt Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
The first kettle Amazon sent me lasted 10 months before the lever, when pushed down, no longer started the boiling process. Waterford Wedgwood, who made the kettle, replaced it with no questions asked, and sent me a mailing label with which to return the original. The second kettle lasted 6 months before the very same thing occurred, and again, Waterford sent me another mailing label. In the meantime, I discovered that what I had assumed was a glass kettle was indeed lexan... and I had been happily drinking gallons of tea, and making my baby's morning cereal thinking the boiled water was not contaminated with any chemicals that might leach from heated plastic. I had been duped.

Dr. Weil has done himself and consumers a grave disservice. Now I am in search of a truly healthy alternative to this electric water kettle. Any suggestions?

Fantastic kettle: boils within 3-4 minutes, shuts off right away, stays at a comfortable temp on the outside so you won't burn yourself. Great product for the price! and no metal or plastic toxicity! Warranty of this product now belongs to Dansk at 800/326-7528 and will be active and available sometime this summer.

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst kettle I've ever owned!, September 19, 2010
This review is from: Dr. Weil 9805 The Healthy Kitchen 1-3/4-Quart 1500-Watt Electric Water Kettle (Kitchen)
There's nothing healty about this kettle. Boiled water used to have a plastic smell.
Not only was the kettle very loud but it also fell apart just a week or two after the warranty expired.
I REALLY regret buying this product and I will never buy anything from Dr. Weil again.

This was a tremendous replacement for a 20-year-old "hotshot". It's sturdy and attractive. I was afraid to get the ones I'd often seen that were almost all glass because I figured that I'd probably hit it on the faucet the first time I tried to fill it and that would be the end of it. This kettle gets the water very hot very quickly. I ended up buying a second one (which cost $20 more) for my sister in NY. She was quite impressed also.
