I purchased the Olfa Cutting Mat through my local quilting shop - at the recommendation of the owner, who has pieced countless quilts and advised even more quilters. In her opinion, this was the best mat for the price. And, since we are friends and fellow-business owners, she is someone I trust.
The size works well for me (24" x 36"), and I have cut strips / squares for two quilts now using my mat. In spite of the fact that many of the cuts are in the same location, there is no indication of even a scratch on my mat. The size is also great since I have been able to use it in several different locations to cut my fabric - including a store counter.
While I know many mats will do the same thing, I have only used this one. And, having both the grids and the inches marked on the one side has made it possible for me to accurately measure my fabric. The other side is unmarked for general cutting.
Because of how it has worked for me, I give it five stars.

Like another reviewer, I've had several of these mats for years and years with no obvious wear. Amazon's everyday price on both sizes is much better than the regular retail price at my local fabric store.

I have kids that love to do art and cut paper. I had this sitting away from my days when I thought I would learn to quilt. But when my son decided he wanted to cut a bunch of paper to do origami, I thought between this and the rotary cutter, it would make quick work of that project.
For cutting paper, you have the grid lines to help you measure -- no ruler required. My only complain is I wish they would put a "lip" on one edge so that the paper doesn't move while you are cutting it.
It is also great as a protective surface while coloring and painting -- particularly when using markers which tend to bleed through paper.
It lasts forever -- I had originally bought my mat back in 1993 and it hasn't "degraded" at all -- it still has the "self-healing" properties for the rotary cutter. The color hasn't faded and it has held its flat shape (despite having been stored standing up).
My only regret is that it took me so long to think of all the uses for this mat!

bought one from the local store, thisis a much better price. I now love cutting fabric, its fast and easy with the measured clear ruler and the fiskars cutter, quilting is fun again.
***a year later , cannot think about cutting without this mat, just buy it and a roller cutter.

I bought this cutting mat because the reviews were good. Maybe I got a dud or maybe it's just not meant for daily use...but my mat does not self heal and has started cracking along the edges. It didn't self heal even from the beginning but has progressively gotten worse. It also cracks just from being bent a little or from cutting down the same line over and over (I sell items I sew and use the same cutting lines frequently). I've used my mat almost every single day for the past 3 years sewing. Amazingly enough my smaller Dritz mat, which I've owned longer and used just as much, still looks brand new. It's time for me to buy a new mat and I'm probably going to go with Dritz or maybe Fiskars, either way, I'm done with OLFA.

This is my first rotary mat so I didn't know what to expect... especially in regards to "self healing". After I received it I was pleased about the size, I knew the size when ordering it but it is still shockingly larger then what I imagined. It is double sided, although only one side has measurements the other side is blank... but both have the "self healing" surface. It is pretty cool when you use the rotary on it and make a little slice in the surface how the slice does disappear... I was very pleased and excited about this. I use a Olfa rotary cutter on it as recommended but when making a curved cut it still left a light slice in the mat that did not heal (hence four stars)... I recommend you use scissors for curved cutting as to not permanently damage the mat. The slice is small enough that it won't be a problem and it is barely noticeable but I want to preserve the life of the mat as long as I can.

I bought this cutting board to use for quilting. I love it! I even use the board and rotary cutter for cutting patterns. Its perfect for my needs and has no sign of wear even though I have used it quite a bit. I store it flat under a pile of things under my bed and still I haven't scratched it or damaged it at all.
