Editorial Reviews

It took roughly eight months to manifest her new vision, with assists from a mix of collaborators with poppier visions such as producers Patrick Berger (Robyn, Icona Pop) and John Hill (Florence and the Machine, Charli XCX), alongside eclectic talents known more for globe-trotting sounds such as Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. She went into the studio with them intending to make a fun record.

Everyone basically already explained how amazing Santigold is... but i must dispute one thing:

WHO BE LOVIN ME IS THE DOPEST TRACK OF THE ALBUM!

I really can't understand the hate I'm seeing over this song! It is completely Santi style! Taking danceable music and adding a unique twist, whether it's lyrical or sonic. I absolute love the flatness of ILoveMakkonen's voice on the track, not to mention the hilarious conceit of the lyrics which creates this beautiful musical paradox that is absolutely lovely to hear on a hip hoppy track (playing on hip hop artists' love of going on about "girls in different area codes"). It reminds me a little bit of slick rick, but on a more upbeat, electronic track. it just fills me up and moves me to the dance floor. It's so playful and fun! I just love the repetition of "so tell me dear"! I would say it has a hint of "I'm a Barbie Girl." Maybe the cover adds to this effect, but the track is almost obnoxiously amazing.
I could go on, but i'll stop now! Just give the song a chance, if you're already a fan of santigold, there must at least be a part of you that appreciates such a silly, absurdly danceable track!

I also fux with Chasing Shadows ;)

Even though you have to wait 4 years between albums, Santigold does not disappoint!

Santigold should be huge, a household name. Forget Beyonce and Taylor Swift - THIS is an artist. I can think of few acts who are as original and fresh, and who are as successful at mixing musical genres as Santi. Or whose output is as consistently excellent as hers. If this album - particularly the tracks Can't Get Enough of Myself and Banshee - doesn't make you want to move and groove, have someone check you for a pulse. Like all her albums, 99 Cents is loaded with earworms you'll find yourself humming or whistling days after hearing the song.

Very anticipated after jamming out the last album. And no let down again. We will be jamming this one out all summer. Bumping beats with good lyrics. A collection of different sounds that add to another album that can play from start to end without a skip. Thank you for some new tunes--they do make the world go round.

She expands on her greatness for this, her third album, and continues to shine her originality through each of these songs.
If you get a chance to see her live while she is on tour within the next few months, go for it. She is one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

Great purchase. The sound quality is excellent quality, plus having the cassette style is rad. Favorite tracks include Chasing Shadows, All I Got, Who I Thought You Were, and Can't Get Enough of Myself. Overall, this album is one of the one's you can just slide in and enjoy. The cover art and bright yellow cassette serves as a great style to impress friends and have some fun listening.

Solid album all the way through! In typical Santigold style, she seamlessly crosses musical genres throughout 99 Cents and is not afraid to try things that you may not typically think would work. Very creative album both musically and lyrically!

I have been listening to Santigold for a while now and her albums are always in my musical rotation. This album is no different. These are the songs that get stuck in your head for days, but in the most wonderful way. She is able to blend musical genres in a cohesive style that is Santigold, making her art accessible to different tastes. I hear influences from Prince, Blondie, Nina Simone, and Kate Bush as she explores themes such as the artist's struggle. These songs are dripping with sarcastic criticism of the current perception of fame and success. There is a strong sense of self-reflection and it seems like she is referring to the story of Plato's cave in Chasing Shadows. She makes this type of lyrical complexity sound easy. I can see why this album took a while to make because it is really well put together. This is turning out to be one of my favorite albums. Also, the clear vinyl is so fun.
