Maybe I'm just crazy, but if I'm getting ninety-nine tracks titled "The Planets and..." I expect all seven Planets to be included in that ninety-nine, not just two.

Wow! This is perfect for someone new to classical music (such as myself). I've been paying about $10 a pop (literally, $10 for a Boston Pops CD) for CDs and some of them turn out to be not to my liking. I already recognize some of these as being great pieces and I am sure I will find more as I listen to all the tracks. I noticed that Amazon does not show the composer for these, but the composers are tagged in these MP3s, so if your software supports it (mine does) it will show you who the composer of each piece is, so if you like something, you know who to look up.

My one small con is that, "The Planets" is prominently listed in the title, but there are only two movements in this compilation and Holst's "The Planets" contains 7 movements (Earth didn't count and Pluto had not yet been discovered, although Pluto IS STILL a planet :)). I guess I really wouldn't expect a whole piece to be included in a compilation by various artists anyway, and it was great marketing, as it caught my eye.

If you are at all a fan or enjoy listening to classical or orchestral music, then look no further. For only $2.99 (for 99 tracks, it's just about $0.03 per track), you can't go wrong. Each track is fantastic and is truly a must-have classic. You won't regret it!

I bought this album, and "99 Must-Have Classic Gold", at the same time. I was seeking some songs from my childhood, as my dad was a big fan of classical and opera, and this album did not disappoint! Also found some new (to me, anyway) material that I've never heard. (Please pardon my lack of expertise or "classical music vocabulary"- I'll try to get across what I mean as well as I can, even though I don't know all that much about classical music. I just know what I like, not the terminology.) This album is full of BIG music- kind of more "hardcore" classic, more powerful stuff. It's very moving, very kinetic music, with more energy than I'd have thought this style of music would have- it's kind of emotional, not flat and dry. My usual types of music tend more towards alternative, classic rock, and older pop, so this album and the other that I mentioned above are a little off of my usual path, but I'm really enjoying it. I would heartily recommend this album to anyone who wants to dabble in a different genre than their usual- it's a lot of material, hours and hours of it, but it's not boring, and makes for great background sound for cooking and cleaning up around the house. It's a vacation from the usual noise, and priced very, very well. Give it a shot- you won't be disappointed, and it'll give you an idea of how other forms of music evolved, too. Good stuff!

Reason I bought this:

Gustav Von Holst's "The Planets" with Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity and Mars, the Bringer of War. Mars was the theme to one of my favorite games "Outpost" for Windows 3.1. Everything else was gravy at three bucks.
