Review

A Band of Roses is a novel rich in detail and Irish legend. The alternate history of this story is that Ireland has remained independent and has been ruled by a monarch for centuries. Although the storytelling is great, it is easy to become lost with the numerous characters. The action is exciting and very detailed. It is obvious that the author has done her research for this well-written book. --Bonnie Lass - Coffee Time Romance

One of the most intriguing alternate history novels to come down the pike in a long while, Pat McDermott's 440-page work covers just about every conceivable plot-twist around. The background of the novel begins in 1002 AD with an obscure clan rising to command the high kingship of Ireland. This book presents the clan, and its leader, Brian Boru, as the survivors (and winners) of the infamous battle against the Viking hordes at Clontarf. In that survival, a new chapter of Irish "history" begins - and thus A Band of Roses is prefaced. Segue to the twenty-first century. Another King Brian is on the throne, and his daughter, the feisty Crown Princess Talty, is pulled into Court intrigue, murder and a struggle for oil off the Irish Coast. The murderous English Regent is determined to bring long held grudges to a boiling point, and the Fianna, warrior guardians of the Irish kingdom, work behind the scenes and throughout time to stop him. Time-travel, Japan, 11th-century Ireland and a secret love for an adoptive cousin keep Talty constantly on the move and in a constant quest for peace, as the Boru clan works with MI6 to thwart the invasion of Ireland and bring the lovelorn Talty home. More than just a romance, the research Pat McDermott put into this marvelous, fast-paced novel brings it into the realm of historical fantasy and interweaves the complicated plot into the fruition of a family line, full of Irish traditions, bloody history and pathos. Lightly reminiscent of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, with a wonderful flavor and character all its own, it is a great read for anyone who wants a tale to sink their teeth into. A remarkably evolved tale for a new writer, be aware that the sequel is on the way (a work-in-progress, tentatively called Fiery Roses) and promises to be as full of thrills and machinations as A Band of Roses. To discover the secret to "the band of roses," to explore the infinite possibilities of alternate history and to lose yourself in the moist, green beauty of the Irish countryside, quickly get to a bookstore to snatch up this excellent spellbinder. Enjoy! --Laura Strathman Hulka - My Shelf.com

Band of Roses by Pat McDermott is an exciting, masterfully told tale that spans the globe and thousands of years. Skillfully drawn characters spring to life in the form of dashing Irish heroes and a very kick-butt princess who'll win your heart.

Modern day Princess Talty must wed a developmentally delayed King of England for the good of her country. When the wedding goes horribly awry, she picks up the tattered pieces of her life to fashion a new existence isolated from those she loves and depended on.

From the opening scenes, where you'll be squirming in your chair, to the ending chapters, where you'll be on the edge of your seat, you'll be assembling the odd bits of scattered puzzle pieces until the entire picture becomes clear and striking.

The heart of Band of Roses is a tender love story with a satisfying and feel good ending that makes the reader want to stand up and cheer. Kudos to Ms. McDermott for weaving a fanciful tale that seizes the imagination and takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride.

A synopsis of the story has been provided, so I won't go there. I will simply say that this is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. I am always amazed when an author can bring us into the realm of time travel and have us picturing, and believing, every scenario she presents. While time travel is not the focus of this book, it does come into play as part of the storyline. We traveled from Ireland to England to Asia to California and to times past. I hated having to stop reading and found myself picking this book up at random moments, even if I knew I only had five minutes...it's simply that good! I was actually a little annoyed when I went to Motor Vehicle this week to renew my driver's license because I was called so quickly...yes, it's that good.

I am impressed by the amount of research that went into creating the different situations that arise in this book...from knowledge of the ancients to modern-day weaponry...and so much in-between! I am grateful to Ms. McDermott for sharing her gift with the world...and what a gift it is! Thank you, Pat, for sharing your story-telling ability with the world...and with me, in particular! More! More!

This is a fast-paced, action-packed love story set in today's Ireland, but with a twist. This author supposes that kings and queens still rule Ireland to this day. Murder and treason send Crown Princess Talty, the present King Brian's daughter, to strange worlds where she encounters Vikings, desert nomads and romance, and returns home at last with an amazing discovery.

You will not be able to put this book down! I hope she writes a sequel soon!

Easy reading is a pleasurable experience that authors spend many months slaving to achieve. This book is one example of the sentence before. Each line carries its own weight without having more or less than it needs. The story moves at a consistent speed and each point of view shift is clearly defined. Character development is sufficient for the supporting characters and as for the main characters, you will be emotionally engaged. Enough with the grammatical notations.

From the first page, the story itself brings you into the heart of characters that are not forgotten later in the book. The Author weaves a tale that brings you to love the heroes/heroines and hate the villains. I actually thought this story was going to be an Irish historical book based on the cover and the description until I turned to the first page and read "twenty first century". I think that is what I liked the most about this book is the Author was able to find a way to combine history and its complexity with modern day technology, politics and religions. I was not bored at any point in this story and when page 314 finally arrived, I cheered. I am looking forward to reading the next two books in this trilogy.

I can't encourage you enough to read this book. You will be transported into time and will be caught up in sacrifice, pain, suffering, courage and love for the hours that you spend dwelling within its covers.

This is one of the most entertaining and exciting books I have read. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole book with the twists and turns. I could picture this as a movie with the romance, intrigue, and powerful characters and surprise twists. You will fall in love with Talty and her many trials. She is such a strong women I really loved her. And the good thing is there are two more books after to finish up this heroine wonderful story
