This is the touching story of a young girl and her father. Originally written by a french author, and later translated into english, this is a book that is sure to be passed down from generation to generation. I am 12 years old and my mother just recently purchased this book for me. I wish every girl could have a copy of this book!
Also recommended: The Elsie Dinsmore Series, any books by Martha Finley, any books by Oliver Optic, C.H. Pearson, or Horatio Alger Jr.
Please, if you want your daughter to read wholesome, enjoyable, thought-provoking, and character building books I suggest you purchase A Basket of Flowers immediately!

When I fist read this book I was only 9. Having been taught to read by my great grandfather, who embodied education. This was one of his favourite books. I found it very sad and at times depressing however, it teaches one that goodness always prevails even in the shadows of death. One learns courage and the depths of love that one can have for their family. This is a book that I will forever share with my great grandfather even though he has left this earth 13 years ago. I could still smell the old hard cover text with the neat engraving on a small basket of flowers. ( I had a very old version). It's a book that I will always cherish.

I found this book on the library shelf. It caught my eye because it was small and old looking. (I like vintage things) The first chapter into this book I instantly knew it was going to be one of my few favorites!
This tale is about a father teaching his daughter about her Heavenly Father. I am seventeen and found this book as intriguing as my favorite classic Pride and Prejudice.
What this book has to offer is character building, and a learning passion for the Lord our Father in Heaven, who always hears our prayers and cares for us far beyond our understanding!

This edition of this fine story includes a second book inserted in between pages 40 and 41. This second book (64 pages)is titled, "Death and Destruction, How to cast Magic Spells for Vengeance, Harm, and So On ...", bu Mlle. Talia Felix. It is exactly what the title says, an actual "cookbook" for magic.

To have published such a book in the first place is simply evil. To have surreptitiously inserted it into another book, a book espousing the exact opposite world view (belief system) is terribly wicked. It is exactly the kind of behavior that is consistent with the source of such evil, Satan, the Father of Lies. This was no accident. Someone(s) are guilty of such wicked deception. May God grant the mercy of Christ and his forgiveness to the author and all involved in this book and its deceptive inclusion.

If you think I'm silly, and magic is no big deal, go ahead and buy this book. Everyone else, find another edition of this fine book by von Schmid. Rev. Reed DePace

When I began this book, I mistook it as a child's story. As I read further, it dawned on me how the author had skillfully drawn me in to see how he revealed the nature of man and the sweet humility of those truly saved by the grace of Holy God. Suffering for loved ones and the eternal rewards that brings were described in terms that will stick with the reader for years. Both of my grown children get a copy of this as I know it will be a blessing to all who read it.

I fell in love with this book the very frist time I read it as a child. It was introduced to me by a dear family friend and I have found that I think about it or reflect upon it at some really interesting points in my life. It moved me to tears then and has done so several times, if not every time I read it (including today when I bought the Kindle version). Everytime I read it I feel as though I understand anew one of its lessons. I am always able to apply it to my life and it tuly inspires me. I wish and pray I had the character of Mary and/or her father. To those who have not read the book or have just stumbled upon it, it is pleasantly and artfully doused with scripture and provides great insight on how one's thoughts are to be trained in order to attain purity of heart. It is true that the pure in heart will see God. And I see God in this great work of literature.

My absolute favorite book of all times. I am never one to keep re-reading books but I have read this at least 4 times and it never fails to bring me to tears. Oftentimes it does takes time and seemingly insurmountable obstacles before justice can be served, but it can happen if we have faith like this father. It is also so important what we teach our children valuable lessons that will help them through their life when we are not around. I chose to name my kids by using a combination of flowers that the father taught his daughter about. I can use the concept of the flowers to teach them about purity, beauty, danger, love, forgiveness and so many other lessons taught by a wise father. I grew up loving this book in Jamaica but for years was unable to find a copy until I decided to really search online, and I am so glad that I did.

Although the Kindle version of this book claims the auther is unknown, other sources credit the work to one Christoph Von Schmid. After seeing an excellent stage production of this work at the Academy of Arts here in Taylors, SC, I was pleasantly surprized to find the original novel on Kindle. It is the somewhat sentimental story of a girl falsly accused of theft. She is banished from the country by the king, and wanders far with her widowed father until evidence is discovered which vindicates her. The king then sends messengers who eventually locate her and bring her back with great rejoycing. The emphasis is strongly Christian and suitable for adults and children alike. It is similar to the stories my grandmother read to me many years ago.
