A Beautiful Dark had everything right-- good characters, interesting mythology, nice setting, decent plot-- but it lacks that certain spark to keep the reader hooked. Skye was a decently interesting main character, her love interests Asher and Devin were engaging but A Beautiful Dark didn't add anything new to the crowded genre. The ending left me willing to read the sequel and I really liked the world building and angel mythology. I just wish I didn't finish with a neutral feeling towards it.

Skye is an orphan living with her Aunt (her mother's best friend who adopted her). She likes skying and is pretty level headed. But that's all I know about her. I know she's powerful but I didn't get to experience that full power. I liked that she struggled with her feelings for both boys. The only thing is, I never questioned who she was going to go for. For the most part, she didn't make rash decisions but there were a few times where I got annoyed with her for being dumb. I did appreciate that she didn't over rationalize the supernatural aspect of things. She didn't believe it at first but after seeing undeniable proof, she was willing to accept it. I liked Asher and Devin's quarreling and both boys separately were good. I just felt like with all of these characters, I'd already met them before. Skye's group off friends actually felt more unique than the main characters at times but I did get annoyed with the selfishness of her best friend.

Where I really enjoyed this story was in it's history and angelic mythology. From the moment Asher told his story by the campfire, I was intrigued. I'd assumed I was dealing with a fallen angel/angel scenario and in this aspect, the story really surprised me. I loved the warring sides and what they both meant.

Let me begin my review with a few lines from the book:

Quote: We were quiet for a few minutes. I leaned my head on his chest and listened to the sound of his breathing.
"You don't have a heartbeat," I realized.
"Does it bother you?" he asked.
"No." I thought for a minute. "As long as you can feel things and care about things."
"It's a misconception that you need a heart to love," Asher whispered into my hair.
I looked at him, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners even though his mouth stayed so serious. He had a little dimple near the left side of his chin. I kissed him, and he wrapped the heavy wool blanket tighter around us as the moon rose brighter in the sky.

When I first saw this book, I added it immediately on my TBR list and it became one of my most anticipated books. I'm glad that I've finally read it and I want to say that I really loved it.

The beautiful premise, the lovely cover, the engaging plot and the two hot guys lurking around makes my reading so fun and enjoyable. This is one of those books that is gripping and very hard for me to put down.

The story began when Skye Parker turned seventeen. On the night of her birthday, strange things began to happen and two boys--beautiful, hot and mysterious suddenly enters her life. She knows there's something about the boys, and there's something about her, too, which makes her afraid and even more confused than ever. And then one by one, the truth about her parents, her identity, and her future unfolded.

For me, the pacing of the story is good. Though I can't say that the characters are well-developed, they are still very likable to me. I'm glad that no one in the story is irritating and annoying, so it's a good thing.

Why exactly is it that I love angel books so much? Oh yeah, it's because of awesome, impossible-to-put-down books such as A Beautiful Dark by Jocelyn Davies! When I say that this book was impossible to put down, I mean it! My ARC copy of this book is bordering on 400 pages, yet I read this book from start to finish in around 7 hours, unable to tear myself away.

I really loved and connected with so many of the characters in A Beautiful Dark, which is something that is really vital to my enjoyment of a book. If I can't connect with the characters, I find it next to impossible to really get into a book, but there were no worries in that regard when it came to this book!

Skye was someone that I felt a connection with almost immediately! She seemed like such a normal teenaged girl; hanging out with her best friends, dealing with boys, trying to do well in school and starting to think about collage. I really like it when I can actually relate to a character, as was the case with Skye, at least before her life got flipped upside down by the arrival of Asher and Devin. I also really liked Skye's feistiness, she definitely had a bit of an attitude and wasn't afraid to use it, especially when it came to Asher and Devin. Skye had so many other great traits, such as her intelligence, strength and determination that really drew me to her and made her such a great character in my eyes!

In addition to having a great main character, A Beautiful Dark also had two absolutely scrumptious love interests! Asher was definitely a bad boy and as a result, he had me hooked from the beginning. He's a bit cocky, mischievous, playful, outgoing, and a total ladies man, at least from first impressions.
