Editorial Reviews

This 50th anniversary re-issue of the original 1964 recording is enhanced with 24-bit remastering and new liner notes by Peanuts historian Derrick Bang. Among the nine tracks from the original Fantasy recording is the now-iconic Linus and Lucy which eventually made its way to prime-time television a year later in the soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas. Also includes two bonus tracks! This is a 'MUST HAVE' for all Peanuts fans, and fans of the classic sounds of the beloved Peanuts music by Vince Guaraldi.

Although unheralded on the packaging (or the Amazon info) this is an expanded 50th anniversary release of Vince Guaraldi's 1964 LP, "Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown" (later released on CD with the truncated title "A Boy Named Charlie Brown," which has led to some confusion, as that also was the name of a 1969 feature-length animated Peanuts film with a completely different soundtrack).

This excellent Fantasy/Concord release is a 24-bit remastering from the original analog master tapes (for all but "Fly Me to the Moon"), and boasts a definite sonic edge over the prior release. You'll hear more clarity and spaciousness in both the bass and percussion. It's a great package, with an expanded, full-color booklet with a wonderfully informative essay by Guaraldi biographer Derrick Bang and graphics taken from the lithographs included with the original 1964 LP release (also apparently recreated for the orange vinyl LP release ). It also includes a previously unreleased, alternate performance of one of my favorite tracks -- "Baseball Theme" (which I'd be willing to bet features different sidemen than the LP version). Very, very nice.

This album was the first place that the world heard Vince Guaraldi's Peanuts-inspired themes, including what many think of as THE Peanuts theme -- "Linus and Lucy." In fact, the recording of "Linus and Lucy" that debuted as the first cut on side B of that LP is the *same* performance that was included a year later on the better-known "A Charlie Brown Christmas" soundtrack LP, and on every subsequent Guaraldi/Fantasy release that includes that song (other than "uncorrected" copies of the 2006 CD remaster, which contained an alternate performance as track 4).

In animating the Peanuts comic strip for television, the music of Vince Guaraldi was as important a voice as that of the child actors who played the characters, as critical a story element as the plot and dialog, and as colorful a setting as the drawings themselves. The music of A Charlie Brown Christmas remains every bit as iconic as Charlie Brown's zig-zag sweater and Linus' blanket, and the soundtrack to that first-to-be-broadcast Peanuts special remains every bit as beloved as Peanuts itself. What many probably don't know is that Guaraldi had first engaged with Charles Schulz, producer Lee Mendelson and the Peanuts gang a year earlier with this soundtrack for the documentary A Boy Named Charlie Brown (not to be confused with the 1969 film of the same name).

Not only did the original 60-minute program fail to find an outlet, but neither did the surviving 30-minute edit (which is available on DVD from the Charles M. Schulz Museum), which was not broadcast at the time. Unusually, Guaraldi's record label, Fantasy, had him re-record the soundtrack material and went ahead with a lavish gatefold release, initially titling it Jazz Impressions of A Boy Named Charlie Brown to echo Guaraldi's earlier breakthrough with Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus.
