Best Pick of 2009,
By
This review is from: A Brief History of Love (Audio CD)
I listen to a lot of music and this is it. A close second would be Bauhaus - Go Away White. Tough to judge something of such depth but if you like a touch of shoegaze with a swirl of dream pop, add a shot of rock swagger and Brittish tounglashing wit, your head will be spinning with this very well made work. Get the vinyl and play it loud on a good stereo. I like the whole album equally but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the track "tonight." Gotta Love It.

A quick concise comparison of Big Pink and the Jesus and Mary Chain - why there is a link, how it happened, and why it is a good thing.

Great Debut,
This review is from: A Brief History of Love (Audio CD)
well, I can't really give this 5 stars as there is one or two tracks i'm not too fond of, but this is an overall excellent debut. if you like Jesus & the Mary Chain, BRMC, Darker My Love and countless other shoegazer rock like I do, then you will love this album. solid, rocking, sweeping and a really fun listen. Track 10(Tonight)is my favorite and worth the price of the CD alone-I can't stop listening to this!

A History of '80s and '90s Alt rock,
By
This review is from: A Brief History of Love (Audio CD)
This really sounds like a mish-mash of '80s drone bands like JaMC, Loop, MBV, etc., mixed with '90s I'm-so-sedated vocals of bands like Lush, Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr.
There's been a lot of this retro stuff going around the last 5 years. The problem is, it just doesn't seem to have any substance. It strikes the pose but doesn't draw blood. Stick with the originals.

Thanks TBP!,

From one music lover to another, this is pure brilliance from start to finish - full stop. Sure, plenty of bands may come to mind when first giving it a listen, but The Big Pink's sound has an originality about it that will consume your soul - promise.

The music album is dead or soon will be. My teenage niece and nephew and their friends don't seem to buy albums. They may buy (or download by other...ahem...free methods) one song or maybe two. So with the oncoming demise of the album concept, this is the first album in a long while that made me take some notice.
I would like to think that I keep my ear to the music rail for the latest and greatest but then again I am a 41 year old man who is more interested these days in getting a good night's sleep on a Friday night. So really, what do I know? No, really. That said, I am still a 41 year old man who still likes to dig for music. Always have and always will. I am constantly introducing my partner to new music. On Sunday mornings as he and I are throwing together our breakfast fare I am usually treating him to the easy listening sort of music but I decided to throw him to the deep end and have him listen to The Big Pink. It's a little out of his range but he's actually enjoying the album. He loves to rock out to "At War With the Sun" and "Tonight" which is funny, funny, funny to watch. "A Brief History of Love" is a great album but on one hand I honestly don't know what to make of it all. In there lies the lure of "A Brief History of Love." It's a mix of everything from, in no particular order: The Jesus & Mary Chain, Empire of the Sun, My Bloody Valentine, LCD Soundsystem and, I swear, The Clash, even with a the title "A Brief History of Love." I hear hear all of these influences and yet The Big Pink make it all their own which is why I think they may be a band with which to be reckoned. This band hails from the 4AD label, home to many a great band and I think these boys are potentially poised from something great. One can never tell really. This is one hell of a stunning starlight debut and now for the fledgling band, the pressure will be on, for better or worse.

My subwoofer is loving it.,
This review is from: A Brief History of Love (Audio CD)
I bought the album simply to hear Dominos again, after having heard only part of it. I'm still breaking in the rest of the album, but my subwoofer is enjoying it so far. I must agree with an earlier review. Play it on a good stereo, on vinyl only if your turntable can handle the bass vibration your sub will be putting out.

A Hit or Miss History of Love,

Don't get me wrong, I think there are some amazing songs on A Brief History of Love. But it's really hit or miss. The album starts off with a bang, with Crystal Visions and Too Young to Love breaking some new ground while channeling My Bloody Valentine and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Dominoes is a really great anthemic single. After that is where The Big Pink starts to venture into unknown territory. Love in Vain slows the train to a grinding halt, an attempt at a ballad that might fit more on a top 40 radio station. The next bunch of songs make me wonder where that band that wrote the first three songs went. Songs like Golden Pendulum and Tonight are just plain boring. All standard fare in the middle of this album, making me wonder if they went after the same songwriting as Switchfoot, but decided to put an 80's sheen over the top. During some of their choruses The Big Pink starts to get back to what makes them different. Like the chorus on Frisk, but by that point it's time to listen to something more interesting. I'm hoping that The Big Pink's next album can focus their songs into something more cohesive. Then maybe the listening won't be so brief.

Debut from London band who deliver droney, electronic, post-psychedelic washes of rhythmic
propulsion and explosive shoegaze soundscapes, wrapped in riveting melodic structures. Recalls a multitude of bands, including Jesus & Mary Chain, Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Verve, Brian Jonestown Massacre, M83, Chapterhouse, My Bloody Valentine, Catherine Wheel, The Warlocks, etc.

Very solid debut cd! In the vein of Editors, Cold Wave, White Lies. Some of the songs have a dark love theme that make you feel glad you're not in love with the singer.
