Chanticleer comprises twelve men, including two basses, one baritone, three tenors, and six countertenors (three altos and three sopranos) and these men have been pleasing audiences since 1978 with their ability to recreate the Renaissance sound as well as their willingness to add contemporary works to their repertoire. They now have well over twenty albums to their credit and it is always with a bit of trepidation mixed with expectation that each new album's release creates. No fear here: though this is not their only CD of Christmas music it is certainly one of their finest.

The music ranges from the plainsong and antiphonal music - as in 'Hodie Christus Natus Est' and 'O Admirabile Comericum' - to traditional English carols and French carols. The sing each song in the language of origin, making this a global celebration. Rarely have we heard the purity of intonation and sound as these men offer in 'Caroling, Caroling',' Rocking Carol', 'Angels we have heard on high' and 'Un Flambeau Jeanette, Isabella'. The collection closes with a memorable Ave Maria.

For those looking for music to add to the season or for those who simply love a cappella singing, this album - A CHANTICLEER CHRISTMAS - is a delight. Start listening to it now and the push and shove of the holidays will simply disappear. Grady Harp. November 10

We received this CD as a gift from a friend. It is a great CD to kick back with your sweetheart, next to a nice fire, with a cup of hot chocolate(or whatever is your pleasure) and just enjoy the great sounds of the season from this amazing a cappella group. Makes me think of simpler times when Christmas didn't seem so commercialized; when folks focused on the true meaning of Christmas. It's great how music can transform you to a completely different time and place.

My wife and I recently attended one of their concerts at a nearby mission. It was incredible to see these guys hit these notes (so effortlessly it seems) in person. I definitely recommend seeing them perform live if you have the chance.

If you're looking for an excellent more subdued/romantic holiday CD, this is the one!

KUDOS TO THE ARRANGERS!
A Chanticleer Christmas is made up of favorite Christmas music from live performances as broadcast on American Public Media. The album features the group in its natural a cappella setting. Twelve members strong: three male sopranos, three male altos, three tenors, two baritones and one bass. Fifteen selections in all from genres: Baroque, Carol, Motet, Renaissance, Romantic Period, Sacred Music, Song. Compared to previous albums such as "Sing We Christmas" with approximately seventy minutes, we are left with about fifty minutes on this one. In addition, the booklet is 'skimpy'; only the text with no comments about the song material. Simply three paragraphs about Chanticleer and its accomplishments, about which I, and many others already know.

So that I may not come across as being too negative, because the singing is clear and lovely sounding with excellent diction and the song material does not lack variety. Especially interesting was the first selection 'Hodie Christus Natus Est' that was quite unique in that it did not maintain the 'plainsong' style throughout but added some quiet harmony and a ground bass near the end. There is no information as to who arranged some of these selections, but I suspect that Joseph Jennings, singer and director of this group for many years, and now listed as Music Director along with Matthew Oltman, may be responsible.

The personnel has changed completely and I did not recognize any of the names, but no matter, their skill is obvious. One complaint might be that the lead male-soprano sounds exactly like a female, and this bothered me a lot! Perhaps not you. But it seems that most of the all-male ensembles of this type, such as The King's Singers, do not use sopranos that sound so feminine.

Chanticleer is an extremely talented group, and this album is one of my most favorite Christmas albums ever. The song selection is wonderful, and each piece is wonderfully performed and recorded in a way that makes the Christmas spirit really come alive. "A Chanticleer Christmas" has become a centerpiece of my family's holiday celebrations.

Every song on this recording is as fresh and new as when it first appeared, many of them centuries ago. Chanticleer is the best in the world at what they do. I particularly bought the recording for their version of Biebl's "Ave Maria." Our chorus is singing that very soon, and their recording is a great one to study. The recording itself is so fine that one can hear the overtones ringing through the church on the last note. Great recording by a stellar group of fine singers.

I might be a little biased since my best friend sings in this group, but it's a wonderful holiday CD by Chanticleer. I played it all day long while decorating my house for the holidays. It's definitely worth it so pick it up for the holidays (it's a great gift too!).

Enjoyable a capella renditions of Christmas favorites. Very nice sound and very soothing. Great for setting the mood for Christmas festivities, reflection, advent prayers, etc.
