Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Sobczak's Choice of Angels is the relentless story of the love between Daniel Harris, son of an upper-middle-class southern Baptist minister, and Ayse Yalcin, daughter of a Turkish (and Muslim) businessman. Ayse is a privileged daughter because she's being allowed to attend college in Atlanta. She vows she'll never date an American, but she and Daniel fall in love despite themselves. When their families exhibit almost violent disapproval, they elope. Ayse's family begins a slow rapprochement with Daniel, but Daniel's father disowns him, and the young marriage is nearly scuttled. Each of Sobczak's characters rings true, and his every setting, whether a Turkish mosque or an Atlanta advertising agency, is compellingly detailed. He's funny, tolerant, and unpreachy. And obviously, he's timely. John Mort

I couldn't put this book down. Maybe it was because in the past few years our family has been in a similar situation. While in college, our son met and fell in love with a beautiful Hindu woman. The author did a wonderful job expressing the heart rending emotions of both families. This is a must read for anyone who has children.

It's been a long, long time since I read a book which tugged my emotions in so many different directions: joy, anger, relief, sadness, and on and on . . . right up until the last page! The author really knows how to make his characters come alive. I found myself thinking about these people as though they were close friends and being terribly concerned about their life choices. The book is timely in its depiction of the need for Christian-Muslim dialogue and understanding and of our tendencies to use religion to create barriers instead of bridges. So powerful!

Interesting story but not especially well written. It is an easy read and goes fast. Glad I read it. And
