This is beautifully written. Vansittart is often criticized for producing poetic prose at the expense of story development, but it seems to me that this rich, virile language is more deeply moving because of its narrative drive. Anyone who has fallen under Syracuse's spell should be doubly thrilled by this book; the reader easily assimilates the unforced descriptions of the city and its streets seem just as real as the ones we can walk today.
