Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 3 Up–Dickens's cautionary tale of an embittered, stingy old man learning to be a happier, more giving person thanks to the intervention of four ghosts has long been fodder for holiday collections. From its stark opening spread (&MARLEY WAS DEAD) to the final one with its much more cheerful winter scene, this year's version, illustrated in Helquist's darkly comic style, is one of the best. Some of that credit must go to Greenhut, who provided the abridgment. Sacrificing none of Dickens's rich language, this retelling reads beautifully. The artist uses watercolor, pencil, and pastel to create cinematic artwork that contains amusing details; additionally, there are a number of pen-and-ink vignettes that help set the scenes. A winning combination of sparkling prose and exciting art.–Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Library END

A Christmas Carol has been a holiday favorite since it was first published in 1843. The original novella has been abridged to picture-book length with new illustrations, and a fine picture book it makes!

The text is not only shorter but also more accessible while still true to Dickens. For example, "Scrooge, a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire" has been simplified to "He was a scraping old sinner, hard and sharp as flint." The plot, too, is streamlined. Gone is Scrooge's little sister, Fan, and gone, too, is Belle, the girl Scrooge almost married, but the three Christmas ghosts appear in all their mystery and magic. Mysterious and magical, too, is the new artwork, combining watercolor, pencil, and pastel to brighten the joyful parts of the story and shadow the eerie events. The result is a winning presentation, sure to please.

A few years ago, I was in a production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL at my community's playhouse. One Sunday evening after the matinee and before the evening performance, I stopped in a Barnes&Noble and decided to pick this book up. It looked like a beautiful adaptation of a classic holiday story that had made my Christmases special for years.

I was not disappointed.

Just take a second now to look at the cover of this book. Whether you have it in your hand, or you look at it on Amazon, just glance at it for a few seconds. Do you see the intricate detail artist Dean Morrissey puts in his illustration? The bricks on the wall, and shadow on Scrooge's face. The snow on the pavement on the ground. This intricate attention to detail is present throughout all of the illustrations. They are gorgeous, and they bring vibrant life to Dickens' classic.

Now, for the treatment of Dickens' writing. This book is abridged, but is marvelously done. Many of the lines are Dickens' own, and all of the cuts come from lengthy descriptions that aren't essential to the story. Dickens' overall tone and beautiful use of language are present in this book, and they make the tale of Scrooge and his redemption as inspiring as it's ever been.

This is a nice introduction if you've never read the Dickens original (though I can't imagine anyone hasn't). However, if you have read it, this is a must-own if you value Scrooge and his ghosts as an essential part of the holiday season, as I do.

I bought this to read to my third graders. We were comparing and contrasting this story with The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. They loved the story. It helped to talk about Charles Dickens, the era that he wrote the story, and why he wrote it. The pictures are nice, too.

I purchased this book for my daughter for Christmas. It is well written for children and illustrated by the same gentleman that illustrated Lemony Snicket's "Series of Unfortunate Events". It is a wonderful edition to anyone's library: young or old.

This book followed the story line quite accurately which I was pleasantly surprised at. I was wondering initially how the book would be able to convey all the details but still move at a moderate pace such that a kid would not be too bored; I was not disappointed with the results. The pictures really added to the emotions of the page that the words didn't have to say and are truly beautiful.

We bought this book for a six yaer old grandson. We are going to the play and wanted him to be aware of the story. THis book is excellent! It has great picturess and is short enough to read in one sitting. The font size was quite good not too big not too small.

A great book for a 6 yr old. Probably 5 to 9 would also like it.

A Christmas Carol is one of my most FAVORITE Christmas stories. I watch the movies every year. I read the novel every year. And when I find books, like this, that are based on the story, I pick it up. I found the ebook of this story last year around this time and fell in love with the cover, wanting to see how beautiful the story was depicted by the illustrator.

(If you go to Amazon, which is where I purchased this, it's a little confusing. Ya see, there is a hardcover, a paperback, and an e-book. Because of the fact that Amazon allows other people to sell books on there, the sales pages(s) can sometimes be a bit frustrating. I'm confused as to whether the e-book is the same as the one I have now, because it has a different cover; says nothing about Brett Helquist, even though it's connected to the hardcover and paperback that do; and speaks of an introduction and literary critique, which my copy does not have. But that's okay, and didn't effect my rating and review, because that's not why I purchased the book, but I would have been interested to read them.)

If you know the story as well as I do, it's a little awkward reading a shortened version of the whole story because you're expecting words, lines, etc to be there and they're not. The illustrations are amazing, though - seeing the depictions in this book, while reading along to the story, was awesome - so awesome I read it twice before I even shared it with the kidd-os. The details that Brett put into these pictures are great.
