Book Description

William Renwick, Earl of Casslebury, has begun his hunt for a wife as he begins all things in life, with careful planning and strict discipline. But his well-honed strategy to acquire the perfect countess goes awry when he finds himself captivated, not by the suitable young lady he intended to court, but by her unusual companion—the quiet, charming, and alarmingly unpredictable Miss Patience Byerly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heroes DO make passes at heroines who wear glasses July 10, 2014
By Ms Bill
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a delightful surprise! I bought this novella on impulse, then inhaled it like a cream puff. Now I'm actively seeking other eBooks by Ms Johnson.

As Mizgamer stated in her review, this really is a short, sweet read. It involves a charming, down-to-earth former soldier who has become earl by chance. Though he intends to court a certain young lady, he finds himself drawn instead to her near-sighted friend, captivated by her intelligent conversation and sparkling green eyes. The romance evolves naturally, and I'm happy to say that no hearts were broken, no feelings manipulated, and no backs stabbed in the making of this novella.

If you're in the mood for desperate deeds and foul betrayals, this story won't satisfy you, but if you're craving a quiet evening with a sweet cream puff, it should do the trick.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable! July 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of my favorite genres...a friend or companion that no one pays attention to, who catches the eye of the H. I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

More importantly. my emotions were not put through the wringer, nor were there endless.breakups and misunderstandings.

Even better, I didn't have to wait until the last page to enjoy the H and h falling in love and experiencing romance.

If you are.looking for a short, sweet read; this is just the treat. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Never Judge a Book by its Cover November 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a delightful little novella. This is the third book I've read by this author--although it's the first novella. The first two books were McAlistair's Fortune and Tempting Fate, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. This novella was just as enjoyable. Ms. Johnson's superior talent for weaving a story shines through in this endeavor. It's a story about a super organized, disciplined, and regimented hero and his delightfully unpredictable lady love. The characters of Patience and William are so artfully created that they seemed to come alive within the pages of the book!

William Renwick, the second son of a second son, had no plans to inherit his family's earldom...and William, an ex-military man, usually has a plan for EVERYTHING! LOL Now that he is the new Earl of Casslebury, William is determined to do his duty by his title and sire himself an heir. In order to do that, of course, he must first find himself a wife. William has set his sights on one Miss Caroline Meldrin, who seems to fulfill all his requirements. Foremost on William's list is a lady who will bring laughter and light into his otherwise staid and regimented existence. In William's estimation, Ms. Meldrin fulfills all his requirements and then some, while her close friend and confident, Ms. Patience Byerly, does not.

William's initial impression of Patience is that she is a somewhat severe looking creature, who is demure, rather plain, and disapproving. She also seems remarkably efficient, and the last thing William needs in his life, is more efficiency.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seventy and counting August 23, 2014

Loved the characters and story line. Am glad it included Patience's father's illness since it was not unusual for the time. It is still in our society today.

Are the typos at the writer's level, the proofreader's , the printer's, or in the transition from book to Kindle book? Are there no spellchecker 's on any of the machines? EXAMPLE: loc 65 Miss Beverly instead of Miss Byerly; loc 473 Caroline instead of Patience; loc 515 Carolina instead of Caroline; loc 935 as took instead of as she took; and loc 1592 swept her into her arms instead of swept her into his arms. There were also others. I am seventy years old and think that I could have done better!! Could someone please answer me. I have been diligently writing reviews for you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacked something - 2.5 stars August 20, 2014

I'm a fan of this author and have read all of her books but this one was disappointing

I agree with all the other reviewers that said that this book lacked substance, could've been longer and the sex scene was unnecessary. It was a light easy read and there wasn't much conflict but the premise was a little far-fetched. Once again I really struggled to get my head around the fact that 2 characters, who hardly know each other, have sex in a few minutes while there are other people are in the house for a dinner party. Why do historical romance writers feel the necessity to write this stuff?

4.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read even when it isn't Christmas. March 22, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a novella recommendation from Nalini Singh's blog. It sounded so cozy it seemed a perfect read for what has turned out to be the dreariest day so far this year.

William Renwick, Earl of Casslebury sets out to find a wife with his usual military precision, but the quarry in question manages to continually elude him. Right when he thinks he has her cornered, he finds out her companion has some unusual proclivities. No, it's not dirty, but it is one of the most humorous and novel openings to a story that I have had the pleasure to read. I simply adore a military man with a sly sense of humor who only thinks he knows what he wants. Patience is a plain woman, of limited means, advanced age for her time period, and even more dismal family lines. Not at all the sort of woman an earl would choose. Fortunately our intrepid hero doesn't continue to pursue the wrong woman out of stubbornness, and in relatively short order a lovely sort of silly and romantic relationship blooms. Of course it had to bloom in short order, this is a novella, which means that there are very few conflicts than can be capably handled, and in this case it was the BIG SECRET. It isn't my favorite trope, but with the secret in question, I can understand why it was kept.

A Christmas Dance was an altogether lovely novella that brightened my dreary day right up.

No high drama, no overly tragic backstory. Just two very sweet people falling in love. Would love to read Mr. and Mrs. Meldrin' s story one of these days, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Short & sweet
I enjoyed this story a lot. It wasn't as long as some books are. But I liked that the storyline developed quickly. The main characters are very likeable and there's a good finish.
