Jazz for the “here and now” is the best way to describe vibraphonist, composer and bandleader Stefon Harris’ new disc, Urbanus, his 7th CD as a leader, which also marks his Concord Records debut. Urbanus picks up where 2004’s Evolution (Blue Note) left off in that it features Blackout, his scintillating ensemble that’s as versed in modern jazz as it is with ... It's been a long time since a vibraphonist made anything like a splash in jazz. But Stefon Harris is going to change all that. He initially drew acclaim as a member of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson's touring unit, and then provided unexpected depth to Charlie Hunter's group, Pound for Pound. Harris's own debut is marked by slack time signatures that thinly veil Cuban rhythmic underpinnings, clearing lots of space for his own warm solos. Harris likes to emphasize particular ranges on the vibes, hanging in the low end for a rolling few bars before taking off with his mallets, moving them fast enough to create a bumpy blur. Pianist Mulgrew Miller makes a fine showing with Harris's tunes, often staking out a more harmonically exploratory realm. Harris digs subtlety as well, reaching back to Milt Jackson's bag for some of his shadings and nuances. This is a promising, strong session. --Andrew Bartlett

Format: MP3 Music
Discovered by Blue Note Records in 1997 when he was as a talented session
musician on the New York jazz circuit, Stefon Harris became a vital and creative
force on the vibraphone just upon the release of this highly publicized debut CD.
Released to great acclaim in 1998, A Cloud Of Red Dust became a blockbuster
hit that provided the starting point for this young master vibraphonist who deeply
impressed the critics and listeners with his stunning virtuosity, dimensional tone,
sparkling notes, lyrical charm, exhilarating solos and astonishing improvisations.
Highlighted by his direct take on his vibraphone, this excellent track set features
uplifting hits like the opening track Sophistry, as well as with And This Too Shall
Pass, The Prophet, Nature Music and the title track, until ending on a promising
with Bobby Hutcherson's For You Mom And Dad. With a solid band line-up that
consists of pianist Mulgrew Miller, Greg Osby, rising young pianist Jason Moran
flautist Kaoru Wanatabe, the performance deliver a captivating soundscape that
is primitive and done on a sophisticated high note, as this first-time masterpiece
will forever be immortalized as the classic debut that made him an international
music star on the jazz scene. Hailed as one of his greatest and most important
achievements, A Cloud Of Red Dust is a both priceless must and the beginning
a long and highly creative music career for this bright young jazz giant.

I saw Stefon Harris play at the Village Vanguard with Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson. I will never forget that night as I love listening to Warmdaddy swing -- but Stefon swung like no other that night -- he really blew me away...I was shocked at the guys technical brillance combined with his ability to musically convey the essence of his thoughts and emotion. His perfomance was both raw and refined. When I heard this album, I must say I was a bit dissapointed, but it does display his abundant and diverse talents.
