The balance in this book is most peculiar. Of the 268 pages of text, 141 are devoted to medieval Russia (much of it on architecture and on the applied arts), the 17th and 18th century get about 76 pages (again with architecture and the applied arts receiving much attention), the 19th century gets some 45 pages, and about 21 pages are given to the 20th century. There is nothing at all after the Russian Revolution, so nothing the avant garde work before the Stalinist clamp-down. Anyone who is interested in Russian painting will be vastly better served by Alan Bird's superb History of Russian Painting (Phaidon, 1987 - see my review on 29 January 2011), sadly and inexplicably out of print.
