Editorial Reviews

The first artist in the Rhymesayers Spotlight Series. Best known as opening act and hype man for Brother Ali, Toki is not only a well-established emcee, but he's one of the hardest working community activists in the Twin Cities. With numerous accolades and a tour history that has taken him from NY to Uganda, Toki is ready to take his next step with this release. Features Brother Ali, Scarub (Living Legends), I Self Devine, Felipe Cuauhtli (Los Nativos), St. Paul Slim, and Trama.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you're gonna do it, do it Right October 13, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Definately a good call by the Rhymesayers to showcase this experienced emcee from the Twin Cities.

My favorite track is, 'Devil's Advocate,' just for it's entertainment value. His voice is soothing reminding me of Mos Def but more challenging.

The track, 'Good,' is nice to be a first song of my day. Mandi's vocals put a smile on my face.

The title track, 'A Different Mirror,' sends a timely message. "In this cursed last of centuries if you've forgotten read your shirt tag and what percent is cotton?"..."After fighting border-countries' freedom overseas I returned to burning crosses, fire hoses, and police. It was cool for me to risk my life to fight the Reich and go and shoot but I can't feed my pregnant wife or go inside the voting booth." His lyrics are on a different level here. I think the message has to do with the critical time we live in. "Know your history."

I Self Devine is a nice addition to the song, 'Rise.' There's definately a timely feeling. "What goes up, must come down."

It's simply a great intro to what follows, 'State of Emergency.' It shows how much potential he has in the game & includes a nice breakdown for the last 45 secs.

The beat in 'Truth or Dare' is amazing. I can relax to this.

And he's got friends in Brother Ali on 'The Feeling.' His flows are versatile. I will be waiting for more albums to come.
