Book Description

Set your Kindle's primary dictionary to "Digital Latin Dictionary" and get ready to read any Latin text! Clear and concise definitions appear whenever needed!
  • Even words ending in the -que enclitic are covered!
  • Even words using "u" instead of "v" not to mention "i" instead of "j"!
  • More than 39,000 entries.
  • Words from Classic Rome to Medieval, Ecclesiastical and beyond are included.
  • Based on the respected Whitaker's Words program and data.
As the Kindle doesn't recognize Latin, set this dictionary to the default under you English setting. Your English dictionary will still be available!
Looking for macrons (long marks over vowels?) Please check out Latin English Lexicon. Use both for better coverage!

Note to Kindle Fire, HD users. As of this writing (March 2013) no color Kindle device can install any dictionary other than the ones provided by Amazon as the default dictionary. This may change at any time, so please check the appropriate Amazon help page.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome October 3, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition
There are two digital dictionaries for Latin available for the Kindle now. Both are based on Whitaker's Words.
I was wondering how different they were. The answer: not much.
I chose this one (A Digital Latin Dictionary) because of its MUCH smaller file size and it seemed to work faster than the other one. Perhaps it's because of the smaller file size. The other dictionary is 40 megabytes!
Then there's the price. This one is cheaper. Period.
Cheaper, Faster, Better. What's not to like?

This dictionary (and its more cumbersome counterpart formatted by L. Nicolato) are both a major step ahead for support of Latin educational, literary, and reference works on the Kindle platform. Both, however suffer from that major weakness of lexical tools derived from the "WORDS" database: They have been stripped of all pointing (that is, diacritics to indicate proper vowel quantity against the classical or "restored universal" pronunciation of Latin). Traditionally these would be macrons, or more recently following ancient practice - as well as more effectively, both for legibility and cyber-compatibility - apices or "acute" marks.

If you are just an occasional dabbler in Latin, the bare alphabetic lemmas are satisfactory. However, even the most basic of printed Latin dictionaries and word-lists have always included vowel pointings for a reason: Anyone who wants to study the language to gain serious competency, to appreciate classical poetry, to prepare for a career in classical studies, archeology, anthropology, comparative linguistics, or lexicography (or even to participate in the fullest aspects of the the modern Living Latin movement), would be advised not begin with such tools as this. A proper awareness of Latin phonology is easy enough to learn if one begins with it - it is almost impossible to acquire later if one does not.

Serious students should hold out not only for correctly pointed Kindle dictionaries, but for fully pointed Latin texts as well, before adopting electronic sources as a frequent mode of study.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Digital Conflict October 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought the Digital Latin Dictionary but couldn't get it to work at first. I also have the Wiktionnaire for French on my Kindle and even when I changed my primary dictionary I still got the Wiktionnaire as the primary dictionary. The Latin dictionary wouldn't work until I completely removed the Wiktionnaire from my Kindle, then it worked just fine. This is something of a nuisance since the Wiktionnaire is such a big file I hate to keep removing and re-installing it every time I want to change what I'm reading.

I had thought this dictionary would integrate itself with Kindle books in Latin, as the Kindle French and Italian dictionaries integrate themselves with books in those languages. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Inflected digital Latin dictionary for students.
There are plenty of nominative nouns and first-person singular verbs, but the number of inflected forms that are included is disappointingly small.
