Jim Jones has recently taken the helm of DipSet, and put himself in the media spotlight, which was completely unexpected, considering the fact that Cam'ron and Juelz Santana are, or at the very least, were, two moderately popular commercial emcees. Cam'ron's hardly even involved in Jimmy's products though, and it appears that Jim Jones has virtually stolen the entire Jay-Z beef from him since the release of Hustler's P.O.M.E.; Juelz Santana, on the other hand, plays second fiddle to Jones, just as he has to Cam'ron for years. The funny thing about Jim Jones being the most visible member of DipSet at the moment is, simply, Jim Jones is not a rapper; something he's profusely admitted in the past. In fact, Jones has basically turned himself into the East Coast counterpart of Young Jeezy; whether you're a fan of the Snowman or not determines how you interpret that statement.

The first five tracks, all Christmas based, are actually decent tracks from Capo Status. If Everyday Was X-Mas is my personal favorite of the five, as the best is infectious, and Rell provides a soulful chorus. The rest only moderately succeed because of the Christmas theme, and Jones' quirky charm, but the first half would be much better if it wasn't weighed down by lackeys, who're are, presumably new Dipset recruits. It would've been much more effective had Jim used established DipSet acts such as the aforementioned Cam and Juelz, or even Hell Rell and J.R. Writer, but Jones chose no-names like Stack Bundles and Mel Matrix for whatever reason.

The second half of the album contains songs that have absolutely nothing to do with Christmas; the first of these five, We Get Money, is actually quite decent; it'd have been a standout on Hustler's P.O.M.E., but on this concept album, it just doesn't fit. Track seven finally does recruit a Dipset emcee with a fanbase, 40 Cal, but he doesn't do anything to help out the lackluster Too High; it isn't bad, again, at least not for a Capo song, but it isn't exceptional by any means. City Boys has a hot beat, but the return of unknown guests brings the track down even further; plus, Jimmy's adlib game is just ****ing grating on this track. Even Jeezy doesn't get this excessive with his adlibs. The We Fly High remix is probably the only reason anyone picked up this album to begin with; and it's the only track that will warrant multiple listens once the other tracks grow tiring(which, unfortunately, will not take long). However, Jimmy's guest list for this remix is borderline attrocious; choosing T.I. was a very wise move, and his short verse is the best found on the entire album, but Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, and Baby, on one song, verses preceding one another? That's just torture. Luckilly, Young Dro brings the track back to mediocrity in the lyrical department, and the song ultimately succeeds in being catchy, and a decent successor to last year's breakthrough single. Max B's solo cut, "Letter To The Game," doesn't have much of a purpose whatsoever however, and judging by his current status with the law, this will likely be the only solo track we ever hear from Max; though this may sound harsh, I doubt anyone will miss him.

In the end, Jim Jones' DipSet Xmas isn't quite as corny as one may expect, but it also isn't nearly as charming as the premise may lead one to believe. It's alright for die-hard DipSet fans, but everyone else will want to skip this, and just download the We Fly High remix.

After Jim Jones status in rap music sort of jumped up a few points, he drops this Christmas album "A Dip Set Christmas". I agree the idea and concept are good, but the fact that Jim Jones headlines this basically throws it out the window. As two reviewers stated, only the first half of the songs on here have to do with Christmas. And when Jim Jones do Christmas songs, they mostly sound like duds. There are a few decent ones on here like "If Everyday Was XMas", and "A Dip Set X Mas Theme". Thats all I can really say good about this album.

The bad, let me put it to you this way: this is almost "Hustler's P.O.M.E." turned into a halfassed Christmas concept. When you get to the second half, you are back to generic Jim Jones. Some people may claim that the highlight of the album is "We Fly High (Remix)" featuring T.I., Baby, Young Dro, and Diddy. But fact is that I found not one verse stood out, not even Dro's (who I believe is real funny). Then there is Jim Jones' good friend Max B. on the pointless solo song "Letter To The Game" which is not rememerable.

If you are looking to a sequel to "Hustler's P.O.M.E.", well you have one. Dip Set fans and 15 year old kids from up north will love this here. I basically can't find myself being a die hard fan of anything Dip Set related material. I personally believe that this album was the fact to see how many people would by anything that the group puts out, and how much money that Jim can collect, which really isn't a bad idea. Unless you're a die hard fan of Jim Jones, this you should avoid. Just to let you know, I basically received this album for free from a local record shop in downtown Atlanta a little bit after Christmas, incase some one is wondering why I don't like Dip Set so much but continuing to have their albums.

Christmas albums have historically been a staple of the music industry for generations, and this has been true for every genre except hip hop (the only notable exceptions coming to mind being "Christmas in Hollis" and "Christmas on Death Row"). Fresh off commercial success on his recent album "Hustler's P.O.M.E." and his east coast anthem "We Fly High," along with countless popular albums released over the past year by his DipSet associates, Jim Jones releases a very intriguing idea in his creative "A DipSet X-Mas" album in 2006. A Christmas rap album is a great idea, especially by a group of artists so popular right now, and this is a great album on paper. Unfortunately, despite its good ideas, this album is lacking in a few areas, mostly due to the fact that only half of the album is actually a Christmas album. I got a total kick out of the first five tracks, and these were songs that I happily played on repeat all through the holiday season. The best is the opener, "Dipset X-Mas Time," which is loosely based on Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime." The production uses sleigh bells and has a great hook and spreads holiday cheer like the best contemporary Christmas songs do. "Have a Happy Christmas" sounds as you'd expect a well-executed Dipset Christmas song would, holiday cheerful gangstas spitting over a tough beat. "Wish List" is interesting, Jim talks about how poor people find a need to commit crimes in order to provide for their family during the holiday and is another fun song. "Ballin on X-Mas" is an entertaining cover of Run-DMC's Christmas standard "Christmas in Hollis," with Jim's signature flavor. "If Every Day Was X-Mas" is another well executed Christmas rap song. As you can imagine, if the entire album were to proceed in this manner it would be fantastic, but the last five tracks are completely unrelated to the holiday theme, the only notable one being a remix to "We Fly High." These sound like they were probably cuts from "Hustler's P.O.M.E." and no one but a Dipset die-hard would find a need to purchase these mediocre cuts. "A Dipset X-Mas" is a great idea and is very entertaining for five songs, unfortunately it seems like this was thrown together a little too quickly. I wish Jimmy would've put a little more into this project, it could've been a very memorable experiment. As it is, I don't expect this to be an album that will last many more Christmases, but it did provide memorable moments for me.
