Book Description

October 9, 2012
Imagine if one sketchbook had been passed down through the decades from one Disney animator to the next, with each one making a contribution before leaving it in the talented hands of another artist. That idea was the inspiration for A Disney Sketchbook. The drawings contained within it represent the entire range of animation development, from the origins of ideas to fully conceived characters. Pencil studies of a much-younger Wendy and a serpentlike sea witch reveal the many imaginative iterations that animators create before they ultimately perfect every hero and villain. And comprehensive studies of Mickey and Baloo showcase the dedication that goes into defining the facial expressions and body language of each beloved character. Films and shorts from throughout the history of the company are featured—beginning with Steamboat Willie and ending with Tangled—demonstrating the ingenuity and skill that have remained a constant at Walt Disney Animation Studios since 1928.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's here after years of waiting October 17, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Length: 1:25 Mins
There's no better way to judge an artbook than by looking at its pages, so I thought the video would be useful to you.

Everyone that knows about this book has been expecting it for years. I even thought it'd never come out. But here it is now in my hands, and I'm really happy with it.

The book is all about the rough images drawn by Disney artists over for classics like Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, Peter Pan and so many others. There's very few sketches of the main characters for almost all big Disney animated movies, so there's something for everyone.

The book has no text, except for an intro by Charles Solomon, where he mentions a few of the famous animators and what they drew. Then, it jumps directly to sketches and more sketches. There's no other text besides that introduction. While it's nice that the drawings are big so you can appreciate every detail, it's bad that there are no credits for each drawing. You're left wondering who the artist might be (although if you're a Disney animation freak, you might identify the style and quality of some of them).

The book is similar in style to Animation (Walt Disney Animation Studios: The Archive Series), although the focus of this book is the rough drawings.

I think that if you're a collector, or you like drawing, you're going to be really happy with this book. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book October 10, 2012
By Pullip
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I think this book is a wonderful treasure for Disney fans. The pages feel like you're looking through an actual sketch book and it's great to see the different drawings for the characters. Of course, you won't get as in depth of a look per film/character as you would for a "making of" book, but you get a good a mount of stuff, ranging from Mickey Mouse, all the way to "Tangled."

It's a lovely book for a Disney fan looking for a great book. Like someone else said, the only flaw are that there are no notes of any kind, so you can't tell who did what when and things like that. Still, a five star book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait October 9, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Like other reviewers, I've had this book on pre-order for several years and it arrived today - it was worth the wait.

This is a beautiful book. The drawing are gorgeous and printed on heavy matte paper. Drawings come from Disney's hand drawn features (ranging from "Snow White" to "Princess and the Frog") with drawings from a few of the shorts mixed in. The drawings are presented in chronological order.

The format is different from the Archive Series but complements it well. I don't have my Archive Series books handy so I can't see if there are duplicates, but if you like the Archive Series, you'll like this book. The book actually feels like the Sketchbook series of books that are out of print and hard to find.

My only complaint is that most of the drawings are unattributed. The only flaw in an otherwise perfect book.

I hope to see more in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sketches, but very few Mickey & Minnie
This book is great, and we enjoy the thick pages with what look like individually drawn sketches on each page, they really don't look re-produced for a book. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book.
Good book, bigger than I anticipated. Only draw back as another reviewer noted, is work is unattributed. Other than that, it's awesome!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's full of drawings and not much else, but that's enough to buy it.
The drawings aren't attributed to their artists (as they wouldn't be in a sketchbook anyway), but aside from this, it's an inspiring book of beautiful work. Read more
