Editorial Reviews

Review

"Listeners will enjoy the lively rhythm of the text, and rhyming words encourage them to anticipate which animal may appear before the page is turned. The digitally rendered art is big, bold, and playful. Imaginative portrayals of the animals include the dog ice skating, the squid getting stuck in a bottle, and the moose wearing a headlamp to find his way in the fog. Shaskan has created a fun, fanciful tale that will engage young listeners during storytime or a lap reading." School Library Journal

" It's easy to imagine a toddler enjoying this while seated on a mom or dad's knee. " - Kirkus Reviews

My three year old just loves this book - it's hilarious!!! We recently also gave a copy to a 3-month old friend who actually pays attention to the book - the vivid colors and rhyming make this a great book for many ages. I'd guess this will be one of those classics some day that we all know fondly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Zany Rhyming Adventure December 17, 2011
Format:Hardcover
A dog can't be anything other than a dog, right? Well, maybe it's not that simple. Young readers follow along as the dog changes from one animal to another, laughing all the way.

This is the perfect picture book for kids because it has simple words and rhymes that will get them reading on their own soon. A Dog is a Dog will have them laughing out loud and eager to turn the pages. Shaskan's lyrical prose is complemented by adorable artwork that is just as zany as the story itself.

Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Book is a book? November 12, 2011
Format:Hardcover
A dog is a dog, naughty or nice, skinny or fat... unless, of course, that dog is a... (well, you're just going to have to read the story to find out, but there's a good chance it rhymes with fat.)

Author/illustrator Stephan Shashkan has written a cute little tale that comically skips between the normal and bizarre. Shashkan has also dome some great work with the graphics, making whimsical illustrations on what appears to be wooden surfaces. A DOG IS A DOG also works well in a digital format.

This is the kind of book kids will want to at least twice - once after they're "in" on the joke - but it's probably too slight a story to read over and over. However, this is definitely a good choice to check out from the library or to read at story time. Kids and adults alike will be amused by this unusual story.
