Editorial Reviews

Review

"Listeners will enjoy the lively rhythm of the text, and rhyming words encourage them to anticipate which animal may appear before the page is turned. The digitally rendered art is big, bold, and playful. Imaginative portrayals of the animals include the dog ice skating, the squid getting stuck in a bottle, and the moose wearing a headlamp to find his way in the fog. Shaskan has created a fun, fanciful tale that will engage young listeners during storytime or a lap reading." School Library Journal

" It's easy to imagine a toddler enjoying this while seated on a mom or dad's knee. " - Kirkus Reviews

A dog is a dog, naughty or nice, skinny or fat... unless, of course, that dog is a... (well, you're just going to have to read the story to find out, but there's a good chance it rhymes with fat.)

Author/illustrator Stephan Shashkan has written a cute little tale that comically skips between the normal and bizarre. Shashkan has also dome some great work with the graphics, making whimsical illustrations on what appears to be wooden surfaces. A DOG IS A DOG also works well in a digital format.

This is the kind of book kids will want to at least twice - once after they're "in" on the joke - but it's probably too slight a story to read over and over. However, this is definitely a good choice to check out from the library or to read at story time. Kids and adults alike will be amused by this unusual story.

A dog can't be anything other than a dog, right? Well, maybe it's not that simple. Young readers follow along as the dog changes from one animal to another, laughing all the way.

This is the perfect picture book for kids because it has simple words and rhymes that will get them reading on their own soon. A Dog is a Dog will have them laughing out loud and eager to turn the pages. Shaskan's lyrical prose is complemented by adorable artwork that is just as zany as the story itself.

Highly recommended!

My three year old just loves this book - it's hilarious!!! We recently also gave a copy to a 3-month old friend who actually pays attention to the book - the vivid colors and rhyming make this a great book for many ages. I'd guess this will be one of those classics some day that we all know fondly.

My 13 month old son is obsessed with this book! We have tons of books and he keeps asking for Dog every time. He loves when the mask comes off and its another animal - he laughs every time! I was hoping the author had any other similar books, and am sad to hear he does not... I will just have to order another copy for when my sons is rips all the pages out of this one!

We love this book! We have read it to our 2 year old son so much we have it memorized. He loves being actively involved in the book as we read it to him - saying the words right after us. It's a silly and fun book.

Beware the children's librarian entrenched in the same old, same old. One of the risks of the profession is that when children's librarians grow jaded, they start to rely upon the same five to eight books for all their storytimes. Toddlers today? Haul out The Noisy Counting Book. Preschoolers? Where's my Dinosaur vs. Bedtime? School age kids? Katie Loves the Kittens it is. All fine books but variety is the spice of life, no? The cure for this unfortunate condition is to find picture books that upset the expectations of not only the children in attendance but their parents as well. With that in mind, it's always a good idea to pep up your readings with something like Kevin Sherry's I'm The Biggest Thing in the Ocean or Guess Again! by Mac Barnett. Finding the little subversive gems that combine the unexpected with great readaloud potential is difficult. On a good year you might find one or two, but only if you look hard. Publishers don't like these risky titles and are far more prone to publish yet another wuvy dovey kittens and puppies book than something with a little bite and sting. Hence my current adoration of A Dog is a Dog by Stephen Shaskan.Read more ›
