Product Description

Few things evoke more holiday spirit than festive Christmas songs. On A Family Christmas, Putumayo offers a collection of yuletide favorites by a fascinating array of artists that every family is sure to enjoy while trimming the tree or sharing a holiday dinner. Seattle-based Johnny Bregar delivers an acoustic rendition of the time-honored "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," recorded especially for this album. Sleigh bells jingle in singer-songwriter Martin Sexton's stripped down version of "Holly Jolly Christmas." Incorporating quirky vocals with a jazzy flare, California-based Big Bad Voodoo Daddy adds its signature retro-swing style to the Louis Armstrong hit "Is Zat You Santa Claus?," bringing to mind images of Santa stealthily delivering presents to an eager household. And Leon Redbone's heartwarming interpretation of the holiday standard "Let It Snow" will keep you cozy on the coldest of Christmas nights. A Family Christmas also features classic songs by country music star Deana Carter, The Christmas Jug Band featuring bluesy singer-songwriters Angela Strehli and Maria Muldaur, British folksinger Kate Rusby, bluegrass innovator Sam Bush, and one of America's best-loved party bands, Brave Combo. New Orleans-based husband and wife duo Debbie Davis and Matt Perrine and fellow Crescent City musicians Lars Edegran and His Santa Claus Revelers with Big Al Carson round out this joyous collection.

About the Artist

Putumayo World Music was established in 1993 to introduce people to the music of the world's cultures. The label grew out of Putumayo clothing company, founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. Co-founder Michael Kraus joined Dan to launch Putumayo World Music and establish a non-traditional sales division. Putumayo World Music has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company's motto: "guaranteed to make you feel good!" Putumayo's CD covers feature the distinctive art of Nicola Heindl, whose colorful, folkloric style represents one of Putumayo's goals: to connect the traditional to the contemporary. By combining appealing music and visuals with creative retail marketing, Putumayo has developed a unique brand identity - a rarity in today's artist-based music industry.

I purchase alot of Christmas music every year. In fact in 2009 I've purchased 6 Christmas discs. This is by far my favorite. Very upbeat with good musical quality without being to slick sounding. No famous singers, but all the songs sound heartfelt. Great CD for Christmas gatherings for young and old alike.

If you want to introduce your kids to a lot of varied musical styles, this is a great recording. This recording starts with a Caribbean flavor on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and ends with New Orleans jazz and "Frosty the Snowman." While your family may have heard every one of these songs, you are not going to hear them like these recordings and that's the most fun.

Such a great album for familiar Christmas songs. There are many different bands featured here, covering various Christmas songs, and almost all of them are really good. My 2-year-old keeps stopping the cd after the first song and replaying "Santa Claus is coming to town," as he loves that one so much. And my 5-year-old likes it too. But it's a cd that is fun to listen to, for adults also.

I recently purchased this CD, and it has sidelined all my other Christmas music. My 2 year old and I can't help but start dancing in the kitchen to several songs on this CD, in particular Brave Combo's instrumental version of "Jolly Old St. Nick." And something about Kate Rusby's beautiful rendition of "Here We Come A-Wassailing" makes me teary with gratitude for my imperfect life.

We love Putamayo kids and have many of their CDs. This one did not disappoint--perfect for kids AND for their grownups. My 5 and 7 year olds have been dancing to the music all morning (which is, of course, hilarious) and I've been enjoying the music as much as the dancers! (Now, if only I could have some of that energy....)

We were looking for Christmas music that was less religious and more commercial but with a twist. There are some traditional folk tunes on here and the variety of styles is wonderful. It combines all of the favorites I remember from a child but with even better arrangements. My favorite mixed artist Christmas CD so far.
