From Booklist

At the end of summer, Abby refuses to give up her sandals despite all her mother’s reasons for letting them go. But while Abby’s playing at the park, swinging higher and higher, her flip-flops slip off her feet and fly away, joining other sandals headed southward in a V formation. At first, she grudgingly puts on boots and wears them all winter, though she imagines her sandals vacationing at the beach and sending her fond postcards. Spring brings two more footwear-related surprises for Abby. Tsiang expresses childlike emotions and thoughts in a simple text that reads aloud well. Washed with cheerful colors, Leng’s cartoon-style drawings interpret the story with originality and wit, from the scene where Abby makes snow sandals instead of snowmen to the postcard pictures, in which the two errant flip-flops cavort on a tropical beach. This is possibly the first picture book on shoe migration, an idea that imaginative children will find nearly believable and wholly satisfying. Preschool-Grade 2. --Carolyn Phelan

OLA Best Bets for Children 2010. Abby's sandals are pink and brown with lime green trim. They are perfect for running and jumping and making tracks in the sand. But when summer is over Mum says they are worn out and it's time for them to go. Abby disagrees but the sandals take matters into their own hands, flying away to the south like birds. Soon unhappy Abby learns to love her blue and white boots with purple trim. Until one sunny spring day... Young readers will delight in this nonsensical story about Abby and her faithful footwear. (Ontario Library Association 2011-02-05)

Tsiang's text is a delight to read, with a gentle poetic rhythm. Highly recommended. (Resource Links 2010-12-00)

Sarah Tsiang does a wonderful job depicting just how connected a child can be with a piece of clothing and Quin Leng's watercolour illustrations compliment the warmth of the story. The story of summer shoes needing to go away somewhere warm is a delightful way to look at seasonal items. (Cabadov wordpress 2010-11-03)

We all found this story...adorable. [It] is an endearing read for any child 2-6. (girlsgonereading.net 2010-10-14)

This whimsical tale is sure to beguile anyone who has ever outgrown a much-loved pair of shoes. (Kirkus Reviews 2010-11-00)

The art is wonderful...and the text is amazingly and beautifully poetic. (wordsbymom.com 2010-10-13)

This is a fun and engaging story, touched with humour and a lot of magic. (Ken Kilback Canadian Children's Book News 2011-04-00)

This is possibly the first picture book on shoe migration, an idea that imaginative children will find nearly believable and wholly satisfying. This is possibly the first picture book on shoe migration, an idea that imaginative children will find nearly believable and wholly satisfying. (Booklist 2010-10-15)

Tsiang's simple yet evocative language will engage young listeners... Leng's depiction of Abby's world...is magical. (CM Magazine 2010-11-12)

This whimsical story filled with charming watercolors will warm the hearts of small children while teaching them a valuable lesson. (Foreword Reviews 2011-02-22)

What happens to sandals during winter? In Abby's case, her favorite pink and brown flip flops fly right off of her feet and join a flock of migrating birds heading for warmer climates. While her sandals send her postcards of sandy beaches and palm trees from far off places -- writing that "we miss you to the bottom of our soles" -- Abby learns to love stomping through the snow in her fuzzy purple and blue boots. But, when spring comes again, Abby's boots hop aboard the Northbound Express as her favourite sandals fall from the sky, ready for another summer of fun. Sarah Tsiang's text is both whimsical and minimalist, perfectly punctuated by Qin Leng's watercolor illustrations. This imaginative, circular story is not only fun and easily relatable for children between ages two and seven, but a pleasure for parents as well. (Caitlin Bakker L'Association des bibliothécaires du Qué 2011-01-00)

The grass may always be greener on the other side of the fence, but the beautiful layouts presented in this book may just persuade you to do away with the front lawn altogether. First published in 2003 and updated in 2010 it offers a new perspective on the front yard, an often-under-used landscape. Ideas include on the cottage garden, Texas-style, English gardens and more. (Paul Eisenberg MetroWest Daily News (Boston) 2011-03-13)

This amusing tale that finally explains where shoes go in the off season is great fun. (School Library Journal 2011-03-00)

Front Yard Gardens is a nicely detailed book with beautiful photographs, full of great ideas for people looking not only to replace lawn with gardens, but to improve existing gardens. (Tom Torrance Washington Gardener 2010-09-01)

I love this book! It is an engaging story about a little girl on a swing whose beloved sandals flip off her feet and fly away. The text is imaginative and beautiful. The detailed and delightful illustrations are key to the book's appeal. "Flock of Shoes" is a charming and clever book that your young child will want to hear again and again and you won't even mind.

A Flock of Shoes is a lovely story - sweet and funny. My 3-year old son wants to read it every night. I've ordered several more copies to pass around as gifts. The writing is pitch-perfect and the illustrations are whimsical and beautiful. Really a gorgeous book for pre-school aged kids, boys or girls.

This is a lovely and exquisite picture book for children -- an essential book for every child's library!
The text is beautifully-written, the story is gentle and enchanting, and the illustrations are a perfect match.
I have read this book countless times to the daughter of my dear friend, and she is captivated by the story each and every time.
In fact, for the Christmas holiday last year, I gave this book with one of the Groovy Girls dolls who looks exactly like the little girl in this book (ordered both from Amazon) -- which made for a fun "set" for my friend's daughter.
A shame the reviewer above had negative comments to make about "alternative lifestyle" -- I hope those comments do not dissuade a single person from buying this superb book for their own children or to give as a gift.

Such a cute little story! My daughter loves shoes, and loved this book as well. Even my preschool-aged son liked the story! Their favorite parts are the postcards from the shoes. The illustrations are fun, and the story moves at a good pace. We loved it so much, we bought it for my neice, Abby, who is 2 and loves shoes too.
