Editorial Reviews

Spyro Gyra started out with the rhythms of the world. From the samba rhythms and Caribbean feel of their early hits to the latest album, they have made it a point to embrace the music of the places they have visited. Their new album, A Foreign Affair, is ready to take you around the world from the Caribbean to South America, and even to South Africa, India and Japan. Besides the memorable instrumentals, there are also three vocal tunes, one of which features Grammy® winning Keb' Mo'.

1. Caribe
2. Khuda
3. Sweet Ole Thang
4. Falling Walls
5. Shinjuku
6. Chileno Boys
7. Samba For Two
8. Canção de Ninar
9. Antigua
10. Last Call
11. Dancing On Table Mountain

Spyro Gyra discuss the making of their new album "Down the Wire"

Biography

The patriarch of the famous aerialist family certainly knew what he was talking about after a lifetime of thrilling, edge-of-the-seat performances for his audiences. While the stakes might not be as high for a jazz band improvising in a recording studio or in front of a live audience, Spyro Gyra’s Jay Beckenstein understands the passion that drives a person and makes “life on the ... My wife and I enjoy all the Spirogyra CDs and can't say that we love every track on every one, but now and then there is a real gem or two that becomes our favorite.

Spyro Gyra displays a worldly array of music which again captures the essence of their talents and musical freedom.

I've been playing Spyro Gyra's music for 33 years... since "Shaker Song" was released as the first radio single from their self-titled debut (vinyl) album in 1978 on Amherst Records, which remarkably, is where the band has returned with this compelling new release. A few nights ago I caught this true supergroup live at Jazz Alley in Seattle, where they featured tracks from A FOREIGN AFFAIR. After the goose bumps subsided, I realized that, without a doubt, this band sounds better than ever. The chemistry among leader/saxman Jay Beckenstein, keyboardist Tom Schuman, guitarist Julio Fernandez, bassist Scott Ambush, and drummer Bonnie B (the new guy... at five years) is incredible. Their sound is brilliant, the new songs from A FOREIGN AFFAIR are some of the strongest I've ever heard from them, and the whole experience couldn't have been more inspiring. A FOREIGN AFFAIR, with influences from the Caribbean, South America, Japan, India and Mexico and featuring special guest vocalists Keb'Mo' and Arijit Singh, might very well be Spyro Gyra's best work yet. In a word, WOW... as in Watch Out World! ~SCOTT O'BRIEN

I also have been listening to Spyro Gyra from the beginning when they hit the airwaves on ol' WRVR. I got lost with them somewhere in the 90s when it all started sounding too much the same. I liked Acoustic Alchemy in the 90s quite a bit as well (still like them) so you can see where I was at -- I guess I was just getting bored. I also dug Kenny G at first when he played with Jeff Lorber Fusion so judge me as you will. :-)

This album is very hot; they have not sounded tighter as a band for years in my estimation. The compositions each have unique character and identity, there's an un-defined, poetic progression to this album, it stays emotionally vital and grows more interesting as it moves from song to song. My favorites are "Falling Walls", "Cancao de Ninar" and "Dancing On Table Mountain". Beautiful stuff.

The musicianship is very high here, production values are excellent, richness, clarity and subtlety. The rhythm section really shines throughout. A feel good album without getting boring. Bravo.

I have to agree with many of the previous reviewers, especially the one who named two of my favorites from earlier Spirogyra CDs ("If you enjoyed "Old San Juan" and "Havana Moonlight", you will enjoy the album A Foreign Affair"). So very true. "Antigua" (Track 9) is now one of my very favorites. My wife and I enjoy all the Spirogyra CDs and can't say that we love every track on every one, but now and then there is a real gem or two that becomes our favorite. This CD is one of those.

Jay and Company do a fine job on this album. There is another drummer change. I still wish Joel R. was a part of this band. The music is very flowing and well constructed. I like well defined and arranged smooth jazz as opposed to free-form improv. Spyro dots their "I"s and crosses their "T"s musically. Each song is a total composition that stands on it's own. I love that about this band. Dave Samuels is always a welcomed guest artist.. Even without Joel, I give the CD a solid 10.

This is a very enjoyable album featuring music selected from countries around the world. Some exotic instruments and non English lyrics are used but the well blended sound of Spyro Gyra shines on.

Spyro Gyra has again proved its ability to create music that is diverse, unique, and satisfying. This CD is much different from "Catching the Sun", "Carnival," and many of its earlier music. However, this group has truly stood the test of time and shown its excellence and ability to adjust to changing tastes, changing expectations, and changing cultural and artistic demands. From the first listen to the 100th, this CD is neither boring nor predictable. Whether or not you are a Spyro Gyra fan, this is a CD you should have in your music collection!

one of my favorite Spyro Gyra's CDs. there are many catchy melodies with some complex arrangements. This is jazz that you have to listen to, not just background music.
