Editorial Reviews

French icon Nathalie Baye (Tell No One, Catch Me If You Can) stars as Judith, the host and owner of a home shopping TV program. Divorced, successful but wary of love, she selects younger male lovers from a host of escorts on the Internet. It s wonderfully impersonal -- and satisfying -- until the day she chooses Marco (Eric Caravaca), a charmingly sheepish man who is clearly not a pro. He s just desperate for money to keep his wife s new business afloat. Marco doesn t want his wife to find out. His wife doesn t want the money to stop flowing. And Nathalie doesn t want to fall in love. None of them get what they want. Or do they?

There are so many appealing elements involved in the film "A French Gigolo" (also known as "Cliente") that I'm a bit conflicted. While I enjoyed this puff pastry, I thought its uneven tone was off-putting. Somewhere between a ribald comedy and a drama of emotional resonance and consequence, the film never really combines its disparate themes into a cohesive picture. It's a shame, really, this had the potential to be challenging and thought provoking or hysterically funny--but, by riding the middle ground, it simply becomes a fairly amusing trifle. Were it not for stars Nathalie Baye and Eric Caravaca, I might have been tempted to dismiss this altogether. The two, however, are quite engaging and extremely likable and, in the end, they sell the film by providing a pleasing charm.

Baye plays a home shopping network host who has been burned in past relationships so relies on paid entanglements for her physical needs. Caravaca is one such paid escort. Married and supporting his wife's family, he got into the business for strictly monetary reasons. They are intrigued by one another, extend their professional relationship, and sometimes start blurring the lines. Every character must face what he/she really wants and needs from this affair before the day is over--and everyone wants it on their own terms. Baye wants the freedom of a paid escort with the intimacy of a real relationship. Caravaca wants the experience with Baye but also loves his wife. And his wife wants him not to see Baye but relishes the financial side of the relationship. There are a lot of moral and emotional dilemmas to be sorted through, but the film has maintained such a frothy tone--I never really connected with moments of heartfelt drama.

I saw this movie on Netflix; I enjoyed it so much I bought it. Wish I could get the soundtrack; I liked the rap 'Gigolo'. A good film; recommend it.

the premise seems designed to be shocking - like Baye's UNE LIAISON PORNOGRAPHIQUE (hard to believe that got translated into "An Affair of Love", eh?) - but Nathalie Baye gives an extraodinary performance in this one - yet she just barely rises above this superb cast of actors

she plays an aging love-cynic who pays for the transient attention of young men who advertise on the Internet - except - she seems drawn to the latest one

for me the story doesn't get going until quite a ways into the film when the young man's wife finds out about his second job

the wife is played by the lovely Isabelle Carré - the prostitute/husband is well played by Eric Caravaca - whose only weakness is a lack of chemistry with Baye

writer/director Josianne Balasko appears as Baye's sister - her role provides the contrasting love story as she falls for an Apache Indian from Arizona - well played by George Aguilar - Balasko's real-life husband

naturellement - my rating is biased by Nathalie Baye's presence
