About the Author

Charles Cantrell is a freelance writer and photographer who has traveled the globe capturing the beauty and mystique of nature. Mr. Cantrell maintains a wild animal sanctuary on his 105-acre estate in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. He has enjoyed horses for most of his life and acquired his first miniature horse, Karma, in 2007. When not rescuing animals, enjoying his horses, and traveling the world in search of the perfect nature photo, he hangs out with his pet birds, mice, and dog friend, Lilly, the white boxer, at his home in Bellingham, Washington.
Rachel Wagner, M.D., M.Ed. is a family practice physician with a master's degree in special education. An avid horsewoman, Dr. Wagner started riding at age five, when she met a woman named Judy Smith. Judy is the person who first introduced Dr. Wagner to miniature horses and ultimately bred the pair of horses that produced Einstein, the mini horse. Dr. Wagner lives a life dictated by her "fur babies." She has horses, birds, mice, and a very spoiled but wonderful white boxer named Lily. She is an ardent advocate for animal rights and a proud member of the ASPCA.

Einstein is a tiny stallion (a baby miniature horse, the smallest ever born!).

This book about Einstein is written and photographed by Einstein's owners, Charlie Cantrell and Dr. Rachel Wagner. They share their personal life with this tiny stallion in this book.

Einstein was born 22 April 2010, Barnstead, New Hampshire.
He was only 11 inches tall and 6lbs!
He is too small to play with the other horses, because he is mini-miniature horse!
He was never able to play with the normal, full-sized horses.
They were too big for him!
He had to find a new friend!
Einstein started to look for a new friend to play with.
It's not so easy when you are so small...

Einstein does not search in vain: He eventually finds a new friend!
His new friend is Lilly, the white boxer,
and this boxer is just the right size
for Einstein to play with, and they become good friends.

This is a story that takes place in live action photos of a time when Einstein was a foal and needed a friend his size. You see because he was so small he didn't fit in with the other horses so he needed someone to guide him.

In this book find out all the friends that his owners tried and finally who Einstein settled on. The pictures are adorable and truth at it's best.

I could look at this book over and over again and not get tired because it leaves you a feeling of such hope in the world. That if this little horse can find a true friend everyone can.

My four year old granddaughter loves this special book. Einstein is the tiniest miniature pony ever born. Told in actual photos, it is a simple, true story about this tiny horse that is lonely and sets out on a quest to find a friend his size.

Here's a heartwarming book for animal lovers about the smallest horse in the world seeking a companion and friend. After failing to connect with cats, ducks, a tortoise, and a hare, Einstein finds a receptive companion in Lily, the owner's own large dog. I like the progression of the story and its ultimate happy ending.

The photos are wonderful in their clarity, expressiveness, and warmth. Especially endearing is the photo of Einstein lying on a bed of straw with three large stuffed horses, each of which approximates his size. A youngster who has been read the story can easily follow the story a second time by viewing the wonderful photos. Because of its size, this book serves well as a read-to book for parents and teachers.

As far as the reading level of ages 4-8, be aware that this is not an independent reading level but more of a comprehension level. Some 8-year-olds will have trouble with words like:rickety-rack, miniature, paddock, sauntered, mewed, scurried, and tortoise.

I'd like to see more photographs of Einstein and his friend Lily, but the omission doesn't detract from the enjoyment of this 'awwww'some book.

This is a sweet, touching book so welcome in the harsh reality of today's world. I plan to use this book during the introduction to the high school library for 7th graders - friends come in all sizes and types and each person or animal has something valuable to offer; it takes just a little effort to make someone's day!

I love this story of friendship told in simple terms (that even a toddler could understand) but with rich and "meaty" language ~ which is key to developing vocabulary in young children. Provides lots of opportunities for discussion between reader and child. Nicely written!
