5.0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Song is not THE Gift of Song, July 30, 2005

The album is great. I was excited to finally find Mason Williams' "A Gift of Song", the composition, on this album. A beautiful Warner Bros recording originally: Mason Williams, Chorus, Orchestra, everything but the kitchen sink. One of my all time favorites. But I was disappointed to find that here the song is a newly recorded instrumental version: nice but plain by comparison. On the original LP, the piece was the last on a side and, typical inner grooves, tended to distort... dissappointing for such a spectacular recording. I am still hoping for a CD issue of the original recording by this very versatile artist/composer. I'll keep looking!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Holiday Gift You Could Share, August 1, 2000
By
Karen Cookson (Sharon Springs, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Gift of Song (Audio CD)
Mason Williams is a national treasure. He is far beyond "crossover" and all the way to just "great music." If some of the new tunes on this album don't become seasonal classics, we're simply not paying attention. Some of them, like his "Mistletoe Moustache," (think about it. . .) Art Maddox's "Winter Lullaby" and "Snow Dream," Rick Cunha's "Hawaiian Sleigh Ride" and Williams' "Santa's Holiday" beg for lyrics, and we can only hope he makes another holiday album soon -- this time with voices so we can sing along. Happy trails, Mason, and keep writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Song; a beautiful instrumental Christmas CD, July 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Gift of Song (Audio CD)
Unlike many of the crass commercial Christmas offerings, this CD offers the listener beautiful instrumental cuts that help you relax during a busy season of the year. The Virgin Mary cut is the best(acoustic guitar, and a mid-east flavor) ,

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One!, December 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: A Gift of Song (Audio CD)
This is my vote for the best Christmas CD ever recorded - and I have a huge collection of them. It's an up-beat, thoroughly enjoyable re-arrangement of several old favorites, rounded out by some modern songs (e.g., the title song and "Christmas Lullaby") that have had very limited distribution before this cut.

Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing change from Christmas "noise"., May 22, 1999

This recording is a must for anyonewho is a Mason Williams fan. It is not only spiritualy uplifting as it brings back memories of Christmasses of my childhood, it also reminds the listenerthat Christmas music does not always have to be overly silly to be enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The rest of my Christmas music sits on the shelf., August 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: A Gift of Song (Audio CD)
I absolutely love this cd and play it year round. No matter what mood I'm in this one cd somehow always manages to fit the bill. It works as soft background music or cranked up full volume. The title track, "A Gift of Song", is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mason Williams at the Top of His Game, January 28, 2008

The Time Keeper "Dave" (Battle Ground, WA. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Gift of Song (Audio CD)
This is one of Mason's best works! The Christmas Music is unreplacable and the story behind "A Gift of Song" is so touching. When I researched this I found another set of words to the song, very close, but slightly different. It would be interesting to find out which are the oringinal.

I saw Mason Williams with Jennifer Warnes at Oregon State University in the fall of 1969. It was such a moving concert. They both sang together so well. I was surprised they never did more work together. They sang "A Gift of Song" together that night and the song still winds it way through my mind to this day. What a pleasant night.

Thank You Mason and Jennifer

Eternally, The Timekeeper

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Song, January 20, 2008

When I first ordered this item, Amazon sent the incorrect CD. I returned that one and received Mason William's A Gift of Song. Our family enjoyed listening to this music throughout the holiday season. I would listen to it today too. We had this CD years ago, but it disappeared. We're happy to have it back.
