Book Description

August 3, 2011
Democracy is the guiding principle for fairly and peacefully making community decision at the local, provincial, and national levels of human society. In this compilation of their collected works, Falk and Strauss argue for a practical approach to now finally extending democratic decision-making to the global system. Praise: "This book is a must read for those who care about our common future." - Mike Moore, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and former Director-General, World Trade Organization. "An important contribution to contemporary debate." - Dame Rosalyn Higgins, former President, International Court of Justice. "Falk and Strauss challenge all democrats to stretch their horizons: why shouldn't we aim for a global parliament?" - Peter Singer, Princeton University. "Falk and Strauss lead the way in calling for a global parliament - a representative body that would have the scope and authority to address vital global concerns." - David Held, London School of Economics

5.0 out of 5 stars A great contribution to the global democratic movement! November 6, 2011
By Petter
By this publication the Committee for a Democratic U.N. has provided us with a collection of the most important essays and articles written (1997-2010) by Professors Richard Falk and Andrew Strauss on the subject of global democracy in general and of a Global Parliament in particular.

In their writings, Falk and Strauss not only criticize the inability of U.S. hegemony and of the current undemocratic disorder of global governance to meet the challenges of our global society. Above all, Falk and Strauss introduce us to a practical political project toward overcoming this dysfunction of the global system and moving beyond the westphalian world order: The creation of a Global Parliament.

A Global Parliament - after being established through an interstate treaty - could begin as an advisory body without any formal power over global legislation. With time - and perhaps sooner than later due to the urgency of its case - this Global Parliament could gain enough support and legitimacy to become a major force in global governance and a key tool for humanity toward the necessary democratization of our global society.
