Editorial Reviews

Review

...the introductory chapters in particular, with their bullet-pointed lists summarizing points for 'Review, discussion, and implementation,' provide some food for thought for UK research students in music education...Students who intend to make use, in their research, of 'Measurement, statistical principles, and models to verify the phenomenon being studied' will no doubt find much of use here. (Music Teacher)

...provides guidance on research proposals, field research strategies, data analysis, and statistical techniques for honors and postgraduate students in music. This fifth edition contains a new chapter on music and technology, plus updated information on the integration of philosophical and aesthetic inquiry, formulating and implementing research problems, and aligning qualitative research with recent concepts and techniques. Music education research is always a fun topic! I found Phelps, Sadoff, Warburton, and Ferrara's (2005) book on research in music education a useful tool as I prepare to write my own Masters' thesis.

Many of the chapters were extremely useful. The sections on the research process, qualitative research, and quantitative research were chapters I anticipate returning to as I write my own thesis. I did, however, find the other chapters a bit of a disapointment.

The chapter on philosophical inquiry was informative but completely useless. I found that Ferrara spent the entire chapter discussing and defending philosophical research as research in the first place, he never once told the reader how to actually do it. Heller (2005) says that "Maybe [Ferrara], too, believes that philosophy is not research" (p. 89) when he defends the point instead of explain how it works.

Bottom line: Use this book if you are preparing a research project using Qualitative or Quantitative research. Anything else, and you might be disapointed!

This book in its 5th edition is a collection of articles dealing with music education research. It provides some early steps to selection a research problem and the research process. Then it includes various types of research projects. It is well written and easy to read. I recommend it to any music education students planning on pursuing research in music education.
