A Hanukkah Present June 18, 2008
Format:Hardcover
A collection of short stories, all set in Chelm, the village of fools, take place around the holiday of Hanukah. We meet several interesting villagers, including Mrs. Chaipul, (who is wise but makes inferior potato latkes), Rabbi Kibbitz, (the town rabbi), and Little Doodle, (the village orphan), who is the hero of the most outstanding story entitled "Out of the Woods". It is longer and has more of a cohesive plot than do the other tales. In this 35-page story, the Cossaks ride into Chelm in order to procure (i.e. steal) food and provisions while the Chelmites flee and hide out in the forest. The book is followed by a glossary and notes. In this anthology, the reader is introduced to many silly Chelmites and also to the life of Jews in Eastern Europe at an earlier time in history. By and large the stories are light in tone and content, and all of them have previously been published in magazines and newspapers, such as Cricket, Jewish Daily Forward, Washington Jewish Week, and others. According to a note by the author, his book is based on a CD from his storytelling tour. Ages 8-12. Reviewed by SHellly Feit

Short Stories for the Family December 12, 2007
Format:Hardcover
A Hanukkah Present is a collection of short stories that the whole family can enjoy. They are about a group of people that live in the village of Chelm. The "Fools of Chelm" as they are called, prove to be anything but that. They struggle to survive, fueled by their unwavering faith in God, their beloved Rabbi and each other. Tue love, patience and alot of humor sustain them in the face of adversity and at times very real danger.
The author notes that the stories have evolved since their original appearance in various magazines and newspapers through his art of story telling. The rhythm and pace of the stories lend themselves well to reading aloud. There is a helpful glossary included.

At the holidays, there's a wash of equal opportunity stories about those other holidays. Too often, they're a little white-washed, disneyfied, with black and white characters that just wash into grey -- and stand out in no special way from the rest of the over-commercialized decorations that clutter our culture.

These stories are different. They're set in a slightly off-beat community of fools, with one foot in the 18th and 19th century aromas of our immigrant ancestors -- and the other squarely in a modern world that will be familiar to children born at the turn of the millenium and since. Binder's humor is wry, but gentle -- and enough to bring a smile to readers and listeners alike. Best of all, he doesn't lose sight of the real meaning of Hannukah -- the right, indeed, the mandate to stand out, to be different, to be true to yourself. My kids love these stories, and look forward to this time of year so I can read them to them again, and again. Yours will too.
