Book Description

Shayla Monroe fled her hometown of Helena, South Carolina, after a shocking situation broke the heart of the only guy she’d ever loved. Years later, after losing her job in Atlanta with her name once again shrouded in scandal, she has nowhere to go but home.

Now a devastatingly handsome and well-respected man, Devin Jones became a successful doctor as a way to forget Shayla’s betrayal. When she returns as infamously as she left, he plans to put aside old feelings and treat her as any other person in town. But after looking into her soft brown eyes, the feelings he thought long dead quickly rush to the surface.

Ignoring rumors, disapproval from family and friends, and promises to avoid each other, the two become friends . . . then lovers. Devin wants all or nothing, but Shayla, haunted by her past, is afraid their relationship will damage what’s left of her reputation. Can two broken hearts survive the fight against past and present demons to heal and find love?

3.0 out of 5 stars I don't think so. May 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have mixed feelings about this book , I liked Devin and I rooted for him and Shayla but I have a hard time believing that a 30 year old woman could be manipulated they that its portrayed in this book. Shayla's action were those of a teenager not a woman, her 23 year old cousin manipulated her , she let people do thing as an adult that I just don't see happening. There are some very touching things that happen in this story, things that made for good reading but, I found myself mad because the premise of the story just did not make sense .

3.0 out of 5 stars Rekindled romance May 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Rekindled romance. Judgmental friends and family. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Miscommunication. Forgiveness.

These are some of the recurring themes of A Heart to Heal by Synithia Williams. This book is her third in a series and features the story of Shayla Monroe and Devin Jones who were once high school sweethearts in the small town of Helena, South Carolina. And Helena is a small town indeed. Shayla returns to town to escape an embarrassing scandal in Atlanta, only to be forced to deal with more judgment and recrimination from family and townsfolk. From her mother to her "frenemies" from her high school clique to patrons at the local diner, Shayla faces scorned looks and nasty comments on a daily basis. Despite having his heart broken by her past behavior, Devin seems to be one of a few people willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. But that's because he can't help but love her, flaws and all.

Devin, now the town doctor, is by far the most likable character in the book, with his father Roscoe Jones running a close second. The author does a great job of developing his character into a hero the reader will fall in love with. He's principled, forgiving, considerate, honest and sexy as sin. With her reputation in shambles Shayla tends to behave in ways that reinforces people's opinion of her, and ultimately the negative beliefs she has about herself, which I assume was the author's way to keep conflict between the two lovers going. But her behavior soon became irritating. After a while, I just wanted Shayla to have an honest conversation with Devin, clear the air once and for all, instead of her continuing to feel that the man was just too good for her.

A Heart to Heal was my first offering from Synithia Williams.

2.0 out of 5 stars Author September 26, 2013
By Barbara
Format:Kindle Edition
I did not like this at all, could not wait for the end (I always finish a book). It seemed like the author did not have anything more to offer after the first chapter, how many times do you have to state how the were in high school! Very repetitive. Would not recommend to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hold Your Judgments... May 10, 2013
By Aja
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A famous quote by Mother Teresa comes to mind when I think of this book by Synithia Williams. She said, "If you judge people you have no time to love them."

Shayla has a reputation for being of loose moral character and the town's trouble maker, a reputation that she lives with by grinning and bearing it despite the hurt it creates. Practically everyone in Helena, the town she was raised in and returned to following a scandal, treats her as if she has a scarlet letter "A" affixed to her chest. But Shayla is misunderstood and would love desperately for at least one person to believe in her, understanding who she truly is. There was such a person long ago...Devin.

Devin hasn't done such a great job in moving on from the hurt he experienced at his high school Homecoming years ago. Despite the fact that he runs a successful medical practice and is handsome as sin, Shayla and the memories of her actions pushed him to loneliness and a tad bit of bitterness towards her. But when Shayla returns to Helena, bitterness changes to desire and amidst the gossip and sneers of Helen's residents, love finds its way back to him. Can Devin see past the misunderstandings and can he trust Shayla again with his heart? Can Shayla learn to love herself enough to stand up against the town's gossip?

Synithia gave me the story I was looking for making this book worth the wait. I'd asked her about Shayla immediately after reading "Worth the Wait" and I was almost positive that Shayla had a story that would be deep, if uncovered. I was right and Mrs. Williams developed Shayla in a way that left no room for judgment. Unless you walk a mile in someone else's shoes you can't cast aspersions and Shayla's mile had to have been one of the hardest journeys ever taken by someone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous April 13, 2014
By Deebee
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Synithia Williams weaves a masterful tale about self-esteem and self- worth, misunderstandings and judgement, acceptance and love. From the very beginning, you will feel for the plight of the heroine, Shayla Monroe, and feel her triumphs and disappointments. It is a riveting book that I enjoyed from the beginning to end.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Love Trifecta is Complete! April 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another stellar page-turner from one of the South's evolving purveyors of sweet, tender love stories. As always, it's best to buckle your e-reader seatbelt as you journey to Helena and Columbia, South Carolina for the third and final series among friends, Malcolm and Kenyatta, Tasha and Jared and Devin and Shayla. This installment follows would've-been high school sweethearts Devin and Shayla as they both return to their hometowns and to the old seemingly unshakable expectations of small-town folks.

But don't go thinking that small towns just have small dramas or small love scenes. You already know Synithia's sauce pot does not disappoint! As with the previous two books you will be immersed not only in the characters' thoughts and memories and fantasies, but you'll also find yourself feeling at home in Helena as Synithia sets each scene simply yet thoroughly. You'll just be feeling all calm and settled in on the front porch of Devin's and Shayla's lives when the story heats up hotter than a Carolina summer!
