I have mixed feelings about this book , I liked Devin and I rooted for him and Shayla but I have a hard time believing that a 30 year old woman could be manipulated they that its portrayed in this book. Shayla's action were those of a teenager not a woman, her 23 year old cousin manipulated her , she let people do thing as an adult that I just don't see happening. There are some very touching things that happen in this story, things that made for good reading but, I found myself mad because the premise of the story just did not make sense .

Rekindled romance. Judgmental friends and family. Self-fulfilling prophecy. Miscommunication. Forgiveness.

These are some of the recurring themes of A Heart to Heal by Synithia Williams. This book is her third in a series and features the story of Shayla Monroe and Devin Jones who were once high school sweethearts in the small town of Helena, South Carolina. And Helena is a small town indeed. Shayla returns to town to escape an embarrassing scandal in Atlanta, only to be forced to deal with more judgment and recrimination from family and townsfolk. From her mother to her "frenemies" from her high school clique to patrons at the local diner, Shayla faces scorned looks and nasty comments on a daily basis. Despite having his heart broken by her past behavior, Devin seems to be one of a few people willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. But that's because he can't help but love her, flaws and all.

Devin, now the town doctor, is by far the most likable character in the book, with his father Roscoe Jones running a close second. The author does a great job of developing his character into a hero the reader will fall in love with. He's principled, forgiving, considerate, honest and sexy as sin. With her reputation in shambles Shayla tends to behave in ways that reinforces people's opinion of her, and ultimately the negative beliefs she has about herself, which I assume was the author's way to keep conflict between the two lovers going. But her behavior soon became irritating. After a while, I just wanted Shayla to have an honest conversation with Devin, clear the air once and for all, instead of her continuing to feel that the man was just too good for her.

A Heart to Heal was my first offering from Synithia Williams.

I did not like this at all, could not wait for the end (I always finish a book). It seemed like the author did not have anything more to offer after the first chapter, how many times do you have to state how the were in high school! Very repetitive. Would not recommend to anyone.

This story in the three friends novel was the most serious one of the three books. -You Can't Plan Love, Worth The Wait, and finally A Heart to Heal. This story focuses on Devin and Shayla. Shayla is run out of town in Atlanta when her relationship with a conniving would-be Senator is leaked to the press. The media attention and backlash result in Shayla losing her career and reputation.. Back home in South Carolina, in small town America, Shayla is vilified and ostracized by the town's folks as a promiscuous woman. The man she always loved has too returned home to open his medical practice and is the toast of the town. Shayla and Devin forge their relationship again on the down low at first, until Devin admits he wants their relationship out in the open. Shayla's crazy mother, aunt and the towns people do not want Shayla and the good doctor to rekindle their old relationship. But these people have no control over a man's heart and a woman's desire. Through lots of self doubt Shayla had to accept whether she was the best choice for Dr. Devin, and Devin had to convince Shayla that they would never survive without one another, even after all the years and all they had gone through. Let Go Let Flow!!!

It's not difficult to understand why the heroine had such self-loathing and low self esteem. When children are wounded by their own parents, without some kind of professional help, most are not able to get over it or cope in society as normal, well adjusted adults. Her father up and left when she was a very young child and her mother berated her at every turn and told her that was just like her no good father. Nor was she crazy to go through changes just to please her mother. Children want attention from their parents..so if it's Mom's approval that's required...so be it. And I'm responding to one of the reviews of this story. I'm more appalled that a mother would choose town gossip over her child than the fact that she's over 30 and should just get over it. So much so that I wished the author had given us a future glimpse at the relationship between mom and daughter once Mom heard the truth. The hero was the best and knew exactly what he wanted!!!

I hate to do this to this author, but I just didn't like this book. I expected so much more from this book and I just feel like it was boring. I read the entire book and I feel like the story could have been great, but it just wasn't for me. I think the author left out the info about Shayla'a past for far too long so I read about half of the book before finding out why her man was so hurt.

The Good: It is a story about redemption and moving forward in the face of naysayers and adversity. That town was horrible to her and her family was even worse.

The Bad: it was just boring to me. The exciting parts didn't come until the end of the book.

The confusing: I don't understand the story behind her necklace.

I gave it two stars because it was not entertaining, but it was well written.
