Editorial Reviews

With Christmas around the corner, Chance--a rider of the rails for twenty-five years--makes one last attempt to reunite with his family for the holidays. His son Charlie (Gerald McRaney, The A-Team), a single dad to two young children, has never forgiven Chance for abandoning him so long ago. But in the spirit of the season, Charlie reluctantly lets his father visit for Christmas week, and the old man wins the love of his grandchildren with his colorful tales of life as a hobo. And when father and son finally come together as family, it's a special Christmas together that they'll never forget.

Gerald McRaney plays Charlie,a widowed father of two. He can't forget that when he was 10-years-old his father, who had lost his job as a traveling salesman due to changing times, left the family for life as a hobo. Now, after 25 years away, his Dad (played well by Barnard Hughes) has decided it is time to come home for Christmas.

Charlie's resentment toward his Dad runs deep. Three years ago Charlie had lost his job as a steel worker, but instead of running away, as he perceives his father did, he went on to join the police force in Salt Lake City. Two years ago his wife died and he has juggled single-parenting and a demanding job since then. When his dad shows up at the police station Charlie, obviously angry, offers to drive him back to the rail yards, but will not let him come home with him for Christmas.

*Spoilers*

Later, as Charlie relates the experience to his girlfriend, she says she thinks he should reconsider because the children deserve to know their grandfather. He relents and goes to find his father, but tells him it is only for one day. The children are happy to have a grandfather and want him to stay for Christmas, but the tension between father and son is often high. Though they share a love for the children and a love of woodworking, Charlie sees an unbridgeable chasm between them because of the difference in the way they handled things when they each lost their jobs while supporting their families.

Reluctantly Charlie lets his dad stay for the holiday and Chance (Charlie's Dad) involves his hobo friends in the Christmas celebration. It is a little unconventional, but heartwarming. However, it was only for the holiday. The next day the kids will wake to find that Grandpa is gone.

This was a movie that I didn't think I would like but I watched it and I was wrong about thinking it wouldn't be a good movie and I just really liked it. It's about an elderly man who is played by Barnard Hughes, the man is a hobo who hops trains and travels all over the USA and getting the odd job here and there and since it's Christmas time he decides to visit his son played by Gerald Mcraney, they had a falling out and haven't seen each other in years and the father wants to try and make amends and so he can get to know his grandchildren who he has never seen and he wants to have an old fashioned Christmas with his family if his son will let him. It is a very heartwarming movie and I could definitely watch it again

No magic, no Santa Claus, no mystery. This is a simple, but enjoyable and realistic Christmas story. It has a taste of a love-story theme, but the main focus is on the reconnection of father and son. This has become one of my favorite Christmas movies of all time.

Hobo's Christmas starring Barnard Hughes and Gerald McRaney is a good heart warming Christmas movie.Barnard Hughes plays a hobo who travels by sneaking onto box cars on trains, he arrives in a town where his son and grand children live hoping to get back in contact with them. His son played by Gerald McRaney doesn't want to have anything to do with his father because of feelings o resentment for him not being there for him when he was a child, disappointments and misunderstandings but his grand son and grand daughter want to see him so their father reluctantly lets him stay with them and the old man connects with his grand children and trys to mend the rift between him and his son. This movie is very good and I recommend the video to anyone who loves Christmas movies and I would love if the movie would be made available on DVD.

I watched Hobo's Christmas on TV one year and I thought it was pretty good and had a great cast, especially Bernard Hughes and Gerald McRaney. It is a Christmastime movie that has some sad scenes but nothing too melodramatic or sappy and all in all it has a great message about love, family and forgiveness perfect for the Holiday season!

This movie is very touching and I like that. It reminds people about the love and caring families should have all year, especially at Christmas time. In my opinion, this is a good wholesome movie and I enjoy it.

I recorded this movie from broadcast TV almost 15 years ago, and have almost worn out the tape! In my household, this movie is right up there with "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and "A Christmas Carol." I highly recommend it, and will probably order the DVD version, now that I know where to find it.

The movie was cute and warm and had great acting in it. About a family reuniting after many years. The older gentleman rode trains and went from town to town with his train riding "hobo" friends. A movie for all ages.
