Review

Praise for A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar

"Daniel Pyne's A Hole in the Ground Owned By a Liar will put to rest any idle fantasies the reader may have of setting out prospecting for gold. A harrowingly funny story of brotherly strife, amorous misconduct, and small dreams blown disastrously out of proportion. I loved it." --Scott Phillips, author of The Adjustment and national bestseller The Ice Harvest

"Smart, sexy, funny, and a brilliant storyteller. And that's just me. Wait till you read Dan . . . " --Eric Idle

More About the Author

Daniel Pyne was born in Chicago, raised in Colorado, educated at Stanford University, and now lives in Los Angeles and Santa Fe with his wife, children, dogs, cats, a lizard, and an extremely sullen box turtle his grown children left in their wake. He is the author of three novels: Fifty Mice, Twentynine Palms, and A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar. Among Pyne's film credits are the remake of The Manchurian Candidate, Pacific Heights, Any Given Sunday and Fracture. Pyne's television work spans from the seminal hipster cop show Miami Vice to the recent Fox series from J.J. Abrams, Alcatraz. Pyne has worked as a silk screen printer, journalist, cartoonist, advertising copywriter, screenwriter, director, and occasionally teaches writing at UCLA's graduate school of film. Poor Lee. His ex-wife, Lorraine, is now married to a stock broker, his recently released convict brother, Grant, has returned, and Lee is forced (again) to confront the mediocrity of his life as a physics/shop teacher at the local high school. To provide himself with an existential quest meant to both distract him from his pessimism and focus attention on a heroic attempt to embrace the opposite, he purchases a derelict gold mine. The intoxication associated with gold fever infects an ever-increasing cadre of allies that hope and pray that they will hit pay dirt. The cast of characters includes: Mayor Barb, Doug the babbling know-it-all, and the beautiful Rayna. The possibility of a strike also attracts the inevitable elements of darkness. As he so deftly proved with his desert noir thriller, 29 Palms, Daniel Pyne has a way with the wayward. In terse, but deliciously expressive style, Pyne describes the motivations behind the behavior of these two siblings and the mysteries that both bind them together and repel them apart. The geographical poetry of the Rocky Mountain milieu gets under your skin, and as each secret is revealed, you begin to fear for all. A superior yarn with a metric ton of heart. Read it,

A Hole in the Ground Owned by a Liar
Author: Daniel Pyne
Lee Garrison is bored and needs a definite diversion in life. Teaching is his primary career but some excitement and fun at his age would really get his motor running and engine restarted. Lee decides to do something many do and that is see what is out there on EBay. But, most buy jewelry, bid on various items, IPODS, phones and more but Lee is different. He decided to buy something everyone would love to have if it really was real, yielded the profits you might want. No, you won't guess what it is so I will have to tell you: A GOLD MINE! Yes, you read it right. This man decided to find his new found adventure and fun in searching for the one thing everyone wants GOLD! But, there is much more as we meet Lee, understand his frustrations in life and what he needs to do to find the one purchase he made that he cannot seem to locate even with the map that supposedly gives him the location. So, teaching is not what he finds fulfilling although some do as I did. The mine has a dual fold purpose. Lee's brother was just released from prison and hopefully this venture will increase his earning capabilities and keep him out of jail. Where would you find this outstanding acquisition: Colorado. But, would you buy it without seeing it first and finding out if there really is gold? Lee did! So, the author begins with his brother's release from jail and the waitress he meets and wants to snag for his own purposes. Then we meet Rayna who Lee seems drawn to from the start and who helps him with his cuts and bruises when he falls into a deep hole.

I approached the book A HOLE IN THE GROUND OWNED BY A LIAR not really knowing what to expect initially. I have never read a book by author Daniel Pyne before, but after finishing this one I had to ask myself why was I so late to his gift?

In this book he gives us not only situations that are easy to relate to but a storyline that keeps our attention and has us rooting for a positive outcome right to the end. We meet brothers Lee and Grant, each looking for something but have their own unique ways of going about finding it. For Lee his search takes him out of his comfort zone and on a journey that mirrors that he which he seems to be going through in different part of his life.

Lee's brother Grant for me was a little harder to figure out, but in the end it seems as though he might have more of the spunk that Lee wants himself. The story that unfolds is not just about an adventure but about the possibilities that life brings us.

Written in a way that the story just seems to develop right before our eyes, one can see why Pyne is praised the way that he is for telling a powerful story. Full of whit, colorful characters and life lessons to boot, Danie Pyne shines with A HOLD IN THE GROUND OWNED BY A LIAR.

i finished reading a hole in the ground owned by a liar this morning, which is kind of fitting, because i was left with the confused longing i have when i wake from a dream that seemed so real that it takes minutes to realize it wasn't. daniel pyne's book evokes the world of metaphor and importance that characterizes the best dreams. to simultaneously drive a [very amusing] story through a visceral setting [the mountains, the shadows, the suffocating fog, the smells and sounds of the living earth of the rockies] describing it all with cracking contemporary language that alternates with metaphors and poetry [two brothers, one "mine"] is no small feat. following twenty-nine palms, this is a most satisfying meal after a sparkling cocktail hour. although my sensibilities were knocked around a bit until i settled in to the fine prose, i once again finished a daniel pyne book with a grin of eager anticipation for his next. thanks, mr. pyne.
