Editorial Reviews

Review

Moore's simple text is sprightly and inviting, with exclamations and asides that make the audience feel present and included. Her elegant yet cozily rustic illustrations are particularly effective, with delicate shading and crosshatching adding rich but subtle textures. The kind of kids who love to make forts and playhouses in the backyard or living room will find this especially appealing. This would work equally well for bedtime reading or group storytime; either way, youngsters (and their adults) will enjoy spending some time in this pleasant woodsy world.
—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (starred review)

Moore's artwork for this appealing book has a timeless quality. Her pictures depict an inviting woodland setting and express the personalities of a group of animal friends who become an unlikely family. One can almost get lost in the full-bleed pages and spreads, many of which are wordless, evoking the peacefulness of the forest and the warmth of the animals' relationship. A charming tale that underscores the rewards of cooperation.

When I ask adults what their favorite picture books were when they were children, their answers tend to fall into two categories. Either they'll name a famous classic (a "Where the Wild Things Are" or a "Goodnight Moon") or they'll pull out the name of a title that has long since fallen into complete and utter obscurity. When questioned about the latter they'll inevitably cite some aspect of it that stuck when them over the years. Sometimes a particular image or event. Sometimes nothing more than a feeling. It's obscure books that bring about tangible feelings that interest me the most. For me, my favorite book as a kid was "A Time to Keep" by Tasha Tudor. For a friend of mine it was "The Maggie B" by Irene Haas. Now I have read "A House in the Woods" by Inga Moore and I can already tell you that twenty or thirty or forty years from now a man or woman will be asked what their favorite picture book was as a child and they will describe the images here. Maybe they won't remember the exact title. Maybe they'll blank on the author's name. But what they won't forget is the feeling of perfect contentment and peace brought about through Moore's combination of image and text. This is the picture book equivalent of a warm, soothing bubble bath.

Two little pigs (no relation) build small homes next to one another then go out for a walk.

"A House in the Woods" is a book about team work. It's about making a house in the woods and working together. They are doing teamwork to figure things out. They didn't yell at each other when the homes were wrecked. They are always trying their very very best and working together and never giving up. I think that's just amazing.

I think other kids would enjoy this book because of all of the great illustrations. Familiar characters from If You Give a Moose a Muffin, Goodnight Moon, Goldilocks, and The Three Little Pigs all seem to get together in this book.

It's also funny with expressions like: "This was a pickle"!

There is also a surprise with the bear at the end!

My favorite part was "This was a pickle"!

I also love that the beavers want to be paid in peanut butter sandwiches.

This book is special because of the illustrations. The characters are all so cute! ! The store mouse and squirrel at the junkyard are so cute! P.S. My mom thinks they are cute, too!

I even love how they draw the mushrooms. P.S. I even like how they draw their trashcans!

Kids to very old people would like this book. Girls and boys would both like it, especially kids that like to learn about working together to solve problems and not getting mad at each other.

I would give it 85 stars if I could.

I stumbled onto this book at the library as I gathered my typical haul of about 20 books, we go through 2 each night as a bedtime treat for my 3 year old. Many are duds, it's hard to find good books without reading every single one. What a surprise we found with this delightful little treasure! The cover's colors are muted, so I worried that this might be one of those books with some creepily contrived message about loss or pain (Sand Island, I'm looking at you) but it certainly is not. My transportation-nut son also loves construction, and the house that is built here is so fun to watch. Bits of it immediately lodged in his imagination: as we played bunny the next day he said "mama, I'm driving to the junkyard to get furniture for our rabbit hole!" Sweet. And I echo another reviewers delight at the foreign, old fashioned details, like the grocery store where the owner chats with the customers as his employees hustle around, climbing the shelves to get the provisions. I am buying this book, as I believe in 20 years I'll be as emotionally attached to it as my kids will.

I've been meaning to post a review of this children's book for a while. Everything about it made me smile. It's one to add to my list for purchase.

A House in the Woods is a story about animals learning to live in harmony. You see there were (2) little pigs that made a comfortable den and hut for themselves in the forest, and they were quite happy there. One day when the two friends went out for a walk, a bear and a moose, founds the pigs homes quite comfortable. Of course since a moose and a bear are much bigger than tiny pigs, their homes were destroyed, and now all (4) animals were without a place to live.

Moose had an idea, why not build a new house that all (4) of them could live in? They enlisted the help of Beaver Builders to help gather the lumber. Beavers requested that they be paid in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Beavers felled the trees and the other animals helped with the building. The result == all the animals were able to live in harmony, each had a comfy place to sleep, and the beavers were thrilled to see their hard work was rewarded.

The story is sweet, the water-color-like illustrations done by the author are beautiful. It's one of those great children's books that you will be happy to read over and over again to your little ones.
