Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 1-This picture book combines animals with musical instruments. "A is for alliguitar, who has his own picks./B is for banjaguar, who plays some hot licks," and so on. The rhyming text is an invitation to children and caregivers to have a conversation about what animals or musical instruments the youngsters think they see, and it makes for a fun read-aloud. The creatures in the colorful, detailed illustrations have delightful facial expressions, and the letters are prominently displayed. A creative alternative to the standard ABC.-Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OHα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. More About the Author

Growing up, I spent many hours playing in the woods with my sisters, brother, and dog Puppy. We had our own town, Green Meadows, where I published a newspaper written on leaves with "ink" from squished berries and charged 25 cents in hickory nut money.

My family was not surprised when I decided to become a writer. After college, I wrote for newspapers and magazines.

When I started reading to my kids, I remembered how much I loved picture books and started writing my own. I wished on pennies in a wishing well, and ten years later, my first picture book, The Lion's Whiskers, came out.

Now, my sixth picture book, On a Windy Night, is being published. My husband and I live on an island, where I think up ideas while walking the beach and swimming in the ocean. One of my missions is to help today's kids connect with nature.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, fun read! February 28, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book was so fun! My 6 year old was all over this book. She interacted with the names of the animal-instruments, the crazy combinations of the animals and instruments, and what the "real" animal and instruments names are - some of which were new to her. She recited the alpahbet to make sure all the letters were included, she pointed out the really funny ones to her sister, and she totally enjoyed the book from beginning to end. She loved the silliness of the pictures and had a great time explaining to me how the animals matched up with the instruments. I honestly don't think we've had this much fun with a book in awhile.

I, as a parent, loved it myself. It was beyond creative, and it seemed to have a jazzy, Cajun style to it, which I loved. The illustrations were fun, and beautiful.

We will be reading this book over and over again. (And it doesn't hurt that the author and I attended the same college!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Smiling and Rhyming-Loved it! August 12, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book falls under-gee, I wish I'd thought of this! The neat combination of alphabeasts and their letters, plus the fun search to find the instruments makes this a rhyming romp that kids will love. The great thing is, parents won't tire of reading it. Tapping your feet while reading is encouraged!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Alphabet Book with Real Imagination! March 7, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Such a delightful and imaginative alphabet romp. I know this will have the kids in my library storytime poring over the lush and captivating art that brings this fun concept to life and letting their own imaginations run wild too. I have a feeling this one will be one of those books parents are asked to read again and again.
