5.0 out of 5 stars Like Sitting Down for Coffee With an Old Friend June 21, 2012

Fans of the witty one-liners of Bo's Café Life are sure to appreciate this slim volume of essays from Wayne Pollard. Pollard tackles the big issues and occasional delights facing modern-day writers (and other humans): ice-cream addiction, the joys of writing in a coffee shop, what not to wear on a media tour, battling sluggish metabolism and more.

Many observations had me giggling because I could absolutely relate. Pollard's first essay, for instance, is a clever piece spun from his library-sale purchase of Training Your Labrador Retriever by September B. Morn. He writes,"I have no use for this book because I don't have a Labrador Retriever. I don't even have a dog." Ha. I absolutely buy books I don't need because they are only fifty cents. But Pollard did find a use for this dog-training tome, musing that by monkeying with a few words, it might be transformed into a remarkable (and remarkably tongue-in-cheek) manual for training one's husband. "Commands must be learned by voice, hand, and Post-It Notes." The piece on what a conversation between Charles Dickens and his publisher might look like in today's world is funny and frightening. My favorite essay, though, is the one on metabolism and healthy diet. "Tofu reminds me of caulk." Way to ruin this food for me, Pollard.

The voice is sarcastic, humorous and self-deprecating, and, of course, reminds me of Pollard's fictional character, Bo. In that respect, I felt like I was treated to a longer conversation with an old friend. Bottom Line: short, clever, clean writing. A fun book worth every penny.

Witty, insightful and laugh out loud funny. Mr. Pollard's musings accomplish the very difficult task of making you laugh and think simultaneously. You're only dissapointment will be turning the last page.

5.0 out of 5 stars And now I want ice cream! June 19, 2012
By Sarah W
Full disclosure: I'm a huge fan of Wayne Pollard's webcomic Bo's Cafe Life, so I was expecting good stuff from this book--and I wasn't disappointed.

I laughed through all the stories and read bits of "Cafe Life" and "Sprinkles" to my husband--I knew better than to quote the treatise on housebreaking one's husband! There's also a conversation between Dickens and his agent that's eyerollingly snortworthy and the interview tips were both solid and snarky (sadly, my entire wardrobe looks like a three year old gave it to me).

The only complaint I have is that I wanted more, but this is a *lot* of funny for 99 cents, so I withdraw the statement.
