This small budget British "kitchen sink" drama was John Schlesinger's first feature movie, made in 1962.

It was one of several influential British movies in the day, depicting the "real life" of "ordinary people", rather than portraying glamor, fantasy or escapism.

This approach continued as a persistent theme of British movies and television.

While for some this film may seem dated, I have enjoyed watching it again recently, as simply a well made movie.

With hindsight, you can see the talent of Schlesinger, which led him to win an Oscar for his direction of his first US film: Midnight Cowboy- another influential movie of its day.

Rewarding viewing, if you enjoy this genre of film.

According Nietzsche: "The time for marriage comes before the time of loving each one another". And this is precisely the moral lesson of this simple but penetrating portrait around two young lovers who decide to marry after she is pregnant. He will be convince by himself he is not yet prepared to assume all the responsibility for this role. The fine direction of John Schlesinger deserved for this film the coveted and for many people unexpected Prize of The Silver Bear in 1962.
