About the Artist

Folk and fiddle music have been longtime companions for Athena Tergis. Growing up in San Francisco, she began classical violin lessons in the Suzuki method at age four, but soon needed another challenge to keep her interest in music. "I was tricked into going to Alasdair Fraser's Valley of the Moon fiddle camp," Tergis recounts, laughing. "I was hired as a baby sitter by fiddler Cait Reid who was going there, and by the end of the first day, I was hooked. Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh of Altan was there that summer and I just fell in love with her music, followed her around and learned tons of tunes. I never looked back." Over summers at the camp, Tergis studied with Ni Mhaonaigh, Alasdair Fraser, Cape Breton master fiddler Buddy MacMaster and won the Junior National Scottish Fiddling Championship three years in a row. Tergis and childhood friend and fellow fiddler Laura Risk (now also an accomplished fiddler and producer in her own right) often jammed together growing up, and when Tergis was sixteen, they recorded an album of original music, Journey Begun, on Culburnie Records.

Tergis was set to enter Berklee School of Music in Boston after high school but "I went to Ireland instead, and didn't come home for three years," she says. After an intense year sitting in on sessions almost every night, she began to branch out and earn money with her music, working as a backing musician with Irish language television and then being invited

to tour with renown accordion player Sharon Shannon. After living in Galway, Belfast and London, Tergis opened the production of Lord of the Dance in Las Vegas, and not long after was invited to become a principal fiddler for the Broadway run of Riverdance. "That was a wonderful experience," she says. "The music was great as well as challenging, and most important, it allowed me to develop a stage presence -- the cast was excellent and I just learned so much about performing."

After the run of that show ended, Tergis spent some time in New York developing a recording studio and record company. She's now living in Italy, and has started a studio in Tuscany, Terra Linda Studios. She returns often to the Americas to perform, including upcoming plans to appear with Mick Moloney and the well-known group Green Fields of America, with whom she's also working on a recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab traditional Celtic fiddling September 20, 2007
Format:Audio CD
A gorgeous set of fiddle-based, Celtic instrumentals from a former San Francisco native and child prodigy who has worked in Sharon Shannon's band and performed with some of the finest players in the trad scene today. Tergis has a light touch; although she studied with Altan's Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh (who can be a real demon on the bow) and Cape Breton's Buddy MacMaster, she doesn't saw as deep into the notes as they do, preferring instead to skip on top of the melodies and give everything a sprightly twist. Her tone is well-matched by the warm, playful production style of guitarist John Doyle (from the band Solas) as well as her cohorts on this recording. Sharon Shannon is a guest, and Tergis is generous in sharing the spotlight; she's also buoyed by fellow fiddler Liz Carroll, who provides both lovely counterpoint and doubling throughout... If you've often found yourself put off by the sometimes-shrill or monotonous aspects of trad instrumentals, this is the kind of album that can win you back. Consistently lively and engaging, it's a delight from finish to start... Recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack)

Superb. Athena's fiddling is reminiscent of an intricate and delicate series of wild bird songs! She does a beautiful job in presenting this "Letter Home" and I can hear Alasdair Fraser's influence in that she truly has a sensitivity for unabashed expression and creative application infusing influences from other cultures. John Doyle, Natalie Haas do a superb job in their roles as accompanists that is never heavy or contrived - the rhythmic groove suits each piece, no matter how far inside or outside the traditional lines they play and their combined efforts create a very fresh sound with room to breath! There is also a nice cameo appearance with unison and harmony lines by Liz Carroll. Throughout the CD, Tergis displays an interesting variety of moods offering a bold selection of material - from original to traditional - and she pulls it off. On all tracks, it's a delight to hear excellent intonation, a light touch, and a sense for excellent phrasing in her approach. Perhaps she also had good input from John Doyle who was part of the production from beginning to end. I highly recommend this recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Athena Tergis October 24, 2008

A wonderfull cd. A great collection of tunes. Athena's playing style and tune selection is similar to Liz Carroll's. If you know only two of the great names in Celtic music accompanying her on this albumn: Liz Carroll, John Doyle, Natalie Hass, Chico Huff, Billy McComiskey, Sharon Shannon, and Ben Whittman, you'll know how great this cd is.
