Book Description

THEY WERE FROM OPPOSITE WORLDS…

Libby Summerfield can’t wait to get out of Deadman’s Gulch—a lawless mining town filled with gunfights, brawls, and uncivilized mountain men—men like Logan St. John. Stranded there with a new baby, the pretty widow tries to make the best of it. But she vows to return to the refinement of Boston as soon as the weather clears and the stage resumes its run. Maybe then her heart would stop quickening at the thought of Logan’s gentle touch.

…AND IN AN IMPOSSIBLE SITUATION

Logan St. John knows Deadman’s Gulch is no place for a woman—especially one who single-handedly turns him into a church-going family man. Of all the crazy things! The sooner she and her precious baby leave for Boston the better. But how could he stand to lose this spirited woman who tamed this wild western town—and melted his heart of stone forever?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fun Read May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I've been a fan of Margaret Brownley's books since she first started writing. She never ceases to amaze and amuse me with her heart-warming romances. A Long Way Home is no exception. Libby Summerhill is an unforgettable character who could charm a toad out of its warts and Logan St. John doesn't stand a chance against her. Margaret has a knack for taking an ordinary incident and turning it into a humorous calamity that inevitably catches me off guard, making me laugh at the most awkward and sometimes embarrassing moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Long Way Home by Margaret Brownley May 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A story that delights!

Libby Summerhill, widowed and with a new baby finds herself stuck the lawless town of Deadman's Gulch. She desperately wants to return home to Boston, but the weather prevents her from leaving.

Reclusive mountain man Logan St. John gives her shelter, but he has his own reasons for wanting her to leave.

Margaret Brownley really outdid herself with this delightful story that takes place during the California gold rush. I laughed out loud as the rowdy gold miners tried to make the town more respectable so Libby and her baby will stay. The book is filled with humor, romance and memorable characters and I didn't want it to end. Highly recommended.

Wonderful story! Great romance!

Newly widowed Libby Summerhill stumbles into the lawless mining town of Deadman's Gulch and lands on the doorstep of mountain man Logan St. John. Alarmed by her condition, he nurses her back to health, but is unprepared for the way she turns his life upside-down. She's determined to return to Boston before the birth of her child, but is prevented from doing so because of the weather. Instead, she's forced to deliver a bouncing baby boy while a tonal deficient group of miners serenade her. The baby's birth creates havoc as the miners race against time to turn an ugly town into a thing of beauty in an effort to convince Libby to stay. Logan wants her to stay, too, but he knows that Boston is where she and her darling baby belong.

Filled with humor, romance, unforgettable characters and faith, this is one book you won't want to miss. I LOVED it!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my FAVOURITE books! March 25, 2013
By NoelaN

A Long Way Home has become one of my all-time favourite books! It is one of the most delightfully heartwarming, charmingly romantic, and yet incredibly humorous tales that you'll ever have the pleasure to read!

Set in a small gold mining town named Deadman's Gulch with a group of rough and tough men, their one room shacks, two tent saloons and not a great deal else, it was hardly the place for a young woman who is pregnant and recently widowed to end up in. But that is exactly what happens to Libby Summerfield! On her way to Centrefield, Libby is dropped off by the rider of a horse-drawn wagon a mile outside of Deadman's Gulch, as he was fearful of going any closer lest he get shot. After having fallen into icy water, Libby is freezing and fearing for the life of her baby, she presses on toward the town. Having reached the town completely exhausted, Libby is then shot by a stray bullet. She collapses on the porch of the nearest shack which just happens to be Logan St. John's.

Mountain man Logan, is stunned to discover a woman in Deadman's Gulch and on his porch no less. He sweeps her up and carries her inside to revive her and nurse her back to health. Little did he know that by this one caring act, just how much his life would turn upside-down.
Logan is one of those unique and engaging characters that is as imposing as he is vulnerable. His powerful presence in this story will undoubtedly leave an indelible impression upon your heart, as will his charming and distinctive manner and his endearing expression of "Well now."

Libby is a stubborn, strong, and talkative woman, and once she overcomes her initial fear of Logan, she brings a force into his life he didn't think possible, especially from a pregnant woman!

5.0 out of 5 stars very sweet story May 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a sweet, clean story about a pregnant widowed woman starting over in a strange town with nothing but the clothes on her back and being taken in by a mountain man. I enjoyed it immensely, there was nothing I found offensive and I let my daughter read it after me. Well done!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Long Way Home...worth it! :) May 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Enjoyed the story of our hero and heroine but loved the characters of the town and how they changed their thoughts & actions because of Libby & her son. I thought it was outright funny most of the time but still held enough conflict for the story/characters to grow & make you want to root for them.
Would recommend to young ladies & up. A little more graphic than I'm used to in regards to the birth, mentions afterbirth, cutting the cord, breast feeding...not something I would recommend to young girls. JMO It was a good story that brought the West to life. Enjoyed all of the trapping references, found it very interesting. Sweet, funny story that took me away from the everyday which is what I look for. Hope this helps. :)

ABOUT MARGARET:
Thrills, mystery, suspense, romance: Margaret penned it all. Nothing wrong with this--except Margaret happened to be writing for the church newsletter at the time. After making the church picnic read like a Grisham novel, her former pastor took her aside and said, "Maybe God's calling you to write fiction."

So that's what Margaret did. She's now a New York Times bestselling author and a Romance Writers of America RITA finalist with more than 25 novels to her credit. Her first non-fiction book "Grieving God's Way: the Lasting Path to Hope and Healing" has won much critical acclaim. She is currently working on the third book in her "Brides of Last Chance Ranch series."

Not bad for someone who flunked 8th grade English. Just don't ask her to diagram a sentence.
