As a long time fan of MJB, she has always come up with something different, funky, hip-hop, dance and lyrically enlightening. Mary changed it up big time to honor Christmas this year with her own take of Christmas classics with all star producer David Foster. The album clearly favors David's classic mellow treatment, but also brings out another side of Mary where you hear how distinct her voice is. He even included a duet with Barbra Striesand, which to me, sounds like they were on two other sides of the world when they recorded this and not in the studio creating the magic. The Little Drummer Boy arraignment works best and is the opening track as well as This Christmas. I was hoping that Mary Did You Know would pack that same punch, but takes on a different approach which is also appealing and beautiful. The First Noel with the Clark Sisters is also aligned with that same approach and more upbeat arrangement. There is also a duet with Marc Anthony in English and Spanish, Silent Night. The biggest surprise on the CD is a jazzed up version of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer in which she scats a little like Ella Fitzgerald!

Prior to this full Christmas CD release, Mary recorded a duet last year with Rod Stewart for his holiday offering and released it as a single, We Three Kings, which could have easily been included here. She also did a duet with Andreas Bocelli in 2009 called What Child Is This? which fits in this collection as well.
She also recorded a great version of Stevie Wonder's Someday At Christmas back in 1999 and 3 songs for A Very Special Christmas series Christmas In The City (more MJB style with Angie Martinez), Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town (live with other guests).

Target also has a deluxe version with two bonus tracks Winter Wonderland and another version of Silent Night.

Finally a Christmas CD from MJB and she did not disappoint.
This will certainly be in rotation during the holidays. The music and her voice is great. She gets better and better and I'm so happy that she continues to challenge herself. Her range and control as she commands during singing is a blessing. There aren't many artists that I anticipate and will purchase their music, but she's one of the few. Her music is always new, real and inspiring - never same old lyrics and beats that swarm our radio stations.

Go ahead and purchase the CD you'll be pleasantly surprised while listening to some Christmas favorites. Enjoy!

You can count on me to grab every new Christmas album on the shelf, but this collection from Mary J. Blige is the most beautiful, instant classic CD I've purchased in years. The productions are top quality, a mix of soul and traditional, that are the perfect match for Mary's flawless voice.

Among my favorite tracks are "Little Drummer Boy" "My Favorite Things" "The Christmas Song" "The First Noel".. okay, I guess I actually love all of them. If I had to pick out the one weak track, it would go to "Rudolph" which is an over-excited production of the song. It doesn't really fit with the rest of the album.

OVERALL: There are still some 2013 Holiday Collections I'm looking forward to (notably Kelly Clarkson) but so far, I'm geared up to say that this is the one To Get. The quality of the release is high above what most artists put out for a holiday album, and it shows. For some fresh new covers of your yuletide classics, I HIGHLY recommend this album!

Everything song in this collection is a keeper. When I heard Mary J. Blige was teaming up with David Foster for a Christmas Album, I hoped and prayed that his producing skills, matched with MJB's soulful voice would be an ideal fit for a holiday themed album. My prayers were answered and what a great album this truly is. The album starts strong with "Little Drummer Boy" and the classic "The Christmas Song" is jazzy, and it is hard not smile at Blige's swinging take on "Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer." What is especially impressive about this set are the duets, including the sublime "When You Wish Upon A Star" with the legendary Barbra Streisand also featured is Chris Botti, on trumpet. The gospel tinged duet with The Clark Sisters on "The First Noel" is beautiful and well worth the price of admission.

The Target Edition of this album which offers two "bonus" tracks Winter Wonderland and Silent Night.

I can readily tell this album will get a lot of play this Christmas season, and given all that has happened with the government shutdown etc, the album's arrival could not be better timed!

This CD is timeless, it will be enjoyed 100 years from now as much as it is today. To see her constantly mature musically and vocally, it's a joy in itself. To hear someone whose talent was raw but brilliant to begin with now become classic in her own right. It's a gift - this is the CD to buy for Christmastime now and forever. The duet with Barbara is wonderful. I'll be playing this from Thanksgiving to New Years for the rest of my life. A masterpiece. Timeless. Really, this is Mary J. Blige, need I say more?

I have for many many years felt like Mary got the shaft with her music and unfairly so. I do not think anyone (if an award were ever given for a Christmas CD) not award her the Grammy for this! The collaborations are amazing and Barbra who couldn't like these two together? They're like butter! And with Marc Anthony como mantequilla. OMG amazing and Mary you have truly outdone yourself and your voice is showcased here! I love you and hope you get the attention you serve.
