Mary Mary Christmas - Loved it!,
By Kay Kay "kaabee" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mary Mary Christmas (Audio CD)
I'm a HUGE Mary Mary fan and I was NOT disappointed by this CD. I enjoyed this CD from Track 1 to Track 11. It's a Christmas CD done in true Mary Mary style. The traditional songs still hold their traditional sound, but have a different vibe and I like that. During the holidays you hear so much of the same holiday songs, most of them sounding the same...that you appreciate when a musician comes along and makes a song their own. If you enjoy Christmas music, you'll like this CD.
As for the song "California Christmas," I think they were sharing their Christmas with us. Most Christmas songs are about snow and it being cold, well where they grew up/live, there wasn't any of that. I'm an East Coast girl and all I know is snow and cold, but this song opened my eyes to Christmas in Cali, sunny and warm. Christmas isn't about the weather and they are letting you know that no matter the weather, CHRISTMAS is CHRISTMAS!

Very Good Album but...,
By Applesauce McGee "T.V. Nut" (Barbados) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mary Mary Christmas (Audio CD)
As a fan of Mary Mary, I was quite excited to hear that the girls were dropping a Christmas album. Now historically Christmas albums don't do very well (people aren't interested in buying music they can only play for a month and a half and then put it up for fear of someone calling them whacko for playing Christmas music in March) but still i went out and got this album.
I would have to say it is very different, dare I say non-traditional. It starts off with a very Motown-esque "Tis the Season" which really gets the party started. "Only One" just makes you nod your head with its driving beat. They go back to the basics (but put their own spin) on the standards Merry Little Christmas (very nicely done), a very African "O Come All Ye Faithful", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" and "Carol of the Bells". "The Real Thing" and "California Christmas" are not bad either. But my favorite track has to be "Still the Lamb". This is a song that stirs the emotions and calls you to worship especially in the last 2 minutes of the song. My ONLY problem with the album is that it is too short. At less than 40 minutes I didn't feel that I got value for my money. Overall 3 stars.

Seasonal albums are already limited in their scope,
By Dancity Team "http://www.dancity.co.uk" (London, England Uk) - See all my reviews

With a name like theirs, maybe it is inevitable that they would add a Christmas album to their discography. Then again, only the top acts that can carry this off successfully so Mary Mary, spearheads in the ministry, certainly qualify on their credentials. They have wisely kept this one brief, under 40 minutes, perhaps in recognition of seasonal albums' limited air-time (and ear-time).
So Christmas albums rarely rise above the purpose of a backdrop to one's festivities but the odd track here may attract your attention. Choice cuts are `Carol Of The Bells', `Still The Lamb' and the 70's styled `Tis The Season'. `California Christmas' encourages us to go outside, though we in the UK will prefer to stay indoors and shake a leg to the remix. Seasonal albums are already limited in their scope. Cutting straight to the chase with more power tracks like `Still The Lamb' and the double time `Call Him Jesus' is what gospel practitioners are blessed to do. Dishing out token carols where the melody remains the same (`Merry Little Christmas', `O Come All Ye Faithful') and the schmaltzy `California Christmas' may be necessary but are a no-no for me - and such fare should be left to secular artists to churn out. Mary Mary Christmas fulfils its purpose but, because it misses the chance to portray a more defined message and perspective of the season, it has no killer punch. Gift-wrapped, but hardly a surprise.
