Biography

Though Steven Tyler deemed fan favorite Colton Dixon’s 7th place finish in American Idol’s Season 11 to be “beyond shocking,” the 22 year old singer/songwriter held true to his musical passion, viewing his elimination from the show as a huge opportunity.

While the remaining contestants battled it out for the Season 11 finals, he got right to work collaborating on ... Read more in Amazon's Colton Dixon Store

Editorial Reviews

American Idol's Season 11 finalist Colton Dixon's powerful and iconic voice quickly earned him a loyal and enthusiastic fan following among the shows 20 million viewers that kept him from placing in the bottom three until his last week in the competition. Following a shocking early elimination, Colton hit the road with the other Idol finalists for the American Idol LIVE! Tour, where he performed in front of over 360,000 fans across the country.

Colton s musical journey has been a long time in the making, beginning with piano lessons at 7 years old. A lifelong fan of Christian music, Colton remembers his first concert at age 13 performing 'I Can Only Imagine' by MercyMe. That's when he knew he had found his calling. With a humble spirit, Colton answers the call, to be a messenger for a purpose greater than himself. His debut album carries that message of hope and God s unyielding love to a massive audience eager to hear it.

Colton Dixon turned heads on American Idol with his mesmerizing voice and performances. A Messenger is his Sparrow Records debut. The album takes its title from the Bible passage John 13:16: "Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the One who sent him." Starting with the instrumental "Intro," the album quickly displays Dixon's rock influence with the standout song "Noise." The idea of the song is to break from the noise and hear that still, small voice--just knowing that at the end of it all, even through the noise, everything's going to be okay. Surefire hit song "I'll be the Light" is tailor made for Christian radio. The transparent and personal lyrics are infectious: "I'll be the light when there's nothing but night/Till now you've had to feel your way through the honest lies of yesterday/I'll guide you in no matter how long you've been/Lost in love and all alone/A million miles away from home/And when your dawn refuses to fight/I'll be the light." It's very sing-able and a great song.

Dixon is already a chart-topping artist via the album's first two singles, "Never Gone" and "You Are," both of which were released this past fall. The chorus of "You Are" is very catchy: "You are the air I breathe in, You are the hope I'm needing." Dixon says--"To me, that's worship. Whatever song I'm singing, I want God to be the focus and all around me; He's the hope that gets me through to the next day. Amen. "Scars" is a fantastic song co-written with Rob Hawkins. A poignant lyric is "Scars remind us who we are." According to Colton, "it's a map of where we've been in life; you can look at a scar and it immediately takes you back to what happened to create that.

I am NOT a fan of American Idol. When I heard about this guy, Colton, from that show I immediately dismissed him and didn't bother to listen to his music even though I liked his single which I heard on the radio. On a whim I pulled up his album and started listening. I was blown away. I am still blown away. Every song has me shaking my head wondering how someone can be so talented. This is one of those albums I can put on and let play the whole thing. Not just a couple songs. And to think I almost never listened to it because of my preconceived ideas about him due to the show he was on. I almost missed out. This album needs to be heard. It's not fluff. This album is deep while still having the catchiness that radio can grasp. I am blown away by Colton's voice and doubly blown away by the raw, honest lyrics I am hearing. Don't hesitate. Buy this album. And pass along the word. Because I think there are probably a lot of people who are missing out like I was because of that TV show and how I scoffed.

Prime Cuts: Never Gone, Let Them See You, I Rise

American idol (AmIdol) alum Colton Dixon calls to mind another Idol. With his platinum blonde Mohawk hairstyle and his slick black biker looks, Dixon's outward appearance looks like a more youthful version of English rock singer Billy Idol. But this is why the comparison ends. "A Messenger" is by no means a 80s punk rock affair. Rather, this is modern pop-rock album where (as Dixon himself puts it) "faith based songs" abound. If comparisons are to be made, "A Messenger" bears greater likeness to the works of MercyMe, Casting Crowns and Coldplay. Following in the footsteps of Jason Castro, Dixon is one of the few AmIdol to be go the Contemporary Christian route. Never reticent about his faith in God, this 21 year-old Tennessee native gave a rousing rendition of "Jesus Paid It All" at this year's Passion 2013 Conference. (One somehow wishes he would have included "Jesus Paid It All" here on this disc.) Dixon wears his faith proudly on his sleeve when he and Sparrow Records have decided to release the Jesus-explicit "Never Gone" as Dixon's sophomore single to radio. And such an act of faith was handsomely rewarded when "Never Gone" became Dixon's first ever number one Christian hit. Even the album's titular "A Messenger" was not serendipitous; rather, its sui genesis was inspired by John 13:16 where Jesus commissions us to be "messengers" of the One Greater than us. Further, the album's title was also likely reminiscent of the days prior to AmIdol where he used to front a Christian rock band known as "The Messengers."

Most revealing about these 12 cuts is that AmIdol has yet to rub off Dixon.

Colton was my favorite on American Idol last season. I was really looking forward to his first CD and it does not disapoint at all! All the songs are well written and the vocals are great. I really am enjoying this CD. I am so glad that Colton put out a Christian CD and stayed true to his desire to be "a messanger". His songs encourage me and I need it!!! I am thrilled with the excellent Christian music that is available these days. Super talented artists are sharing their faith in a way that we can enjoy the muic and be uplifted at the same time. I highly recommend this CD.
