Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Plourde takes an ordinary winter event and makes an amusing story out of it. As the kids climb aboard the school bus, all the parents yell the same thing: "Don't forget your mittens at school." But, of course, the children do forget. The mittens wind up in a pile in the lost-and-found box, and in the following days, the adults try to find ways to keep the mittens tethered to their children, with yarn, velcro, and duct tape all playing roles. But nothing works, and the hill of mittens grows into a mountain. Pretty soon, kids are getting stuck in the pile—and the teachers who are trying to help them do, too. It's the parents to the rescue, and everyone manages to get home. But the mittens stay put, to the teachers' dismay. Although the ending is a bit flat, readers will chuckle as they recognize what a problem mateless mittens can become. Vane's watercolor-and-ink drawings have a jaunty air as they up the ante, showing wild ways to connect kid and glove and illustrating the prodigious size of the ever-growing heap. More About the Author

Lynn Plourde is the author of numerous kids' books. Most are funny, but some will make you cry. She's a word-player: highfalutin fidgeting, fiddling, fuddling, and foopling. She even makes up words: shmuffle, rizzle, and puckery-smuckery. She's written about those who inspire: a biography of Margaret Chase Smith and a graphic novel about Donn Fendler and his miraculous survival saga. She's a teaching author who has done hundreds of visits to schools where she shares her books interactively, acts some out as plays, and teaches writing mini-lessons (i.e. copycat stories, problem stories, character stories, fables, graphic novel scenes). Having worked more than two decades as a speech-language therapist, Lynn utilizes the knowledge of sounds and instructional skills she gained from that earlier profession in her career as a kids' book author. Lynn is a native Mainer who frequently uses her home state as inspiration when writing about moose, muddy ruds, the four seasons, Mount Katahdin, and being "at one" with nature. She lives in Winthrop, Maine, with her husband. You can learn more about her at her website: www.lynnplourde.com

Plourde, Lynn, A Mountain of Mittens, illustrated by Mitch Vane, Charlesbridge, 2007

Perhaps only children who experience snow can fully appreciate this story about lost mittens, yet all can enjoy the humor expressed in text and illustrations and the rhyming refrain, "Mittens, Mittens. My, oh, my! A Mountain of mittens piled up high" that makes this a sure story time hit. Every day, Molly's parents remind her, "Don't forget your mittens at school" and everyday she and other children do. One day, Mrs. Folly the principal calls an emergency assembly when school classes end, and announces, "No one, I repeat no one, will be allowed to leave school today until you all reclaim your mittens from the lost-and-found pile." Due to all the inventive ways that parents had tried to secure mittens to their children, the pile of children become duct-taped to the pile of mittens; now the teachers swing into action, when Mrs. Folly says, "Holy mittens! ...We can't have our students stuck at school overnight." As you may already have guessed, they get stuck in the pile too. Molly's worried parents call 911, and soon police, firemen, and ambulance workers join some parents who are rushing to the school. The ending is maybe predictable but also highly amusing. The brightly colored humorous and expressive cartoon style illustrations are created using watercolor paints and dip pen and India ink on bright white watercolor paper and stand out clearly enough for a close-up audience. Don't miss this delightful book that will appeal to children in preschool through third grade.

This book was a little too close to home for my first graders, and we all laughed hysterically as we read the book together. It tied in perfectly with our "Mitten" unit, and the students made the connection that we could write our own book just like it. Too funny... very cute. There is repeated text in the story, which they happily chanted along with me. I got requests to read it again, so it will be added to my repertoire to read each winter. Highly recommend for ages 5-7.

If you live in a cold environment then this book is for you and your family! The story is about a girl who looses her mittens and this is an all too common problem here in the Midwest. Her parents do all sorts of crazy things to ensure their daughter doesn't loose her mittens again but, she does. This book will have you and your family laughing out loud!
