About the Author

Terminally addicted to romances, thanks to finding her aunt's stash of 'Harlequin Presents' years ago during a sleepover, J.M. Madden loves any and all good love stories. Most particularly her own. She has two beautiful children and a husband who always keeps her on her toes. J.M. was a Deputy Sheriff in Ohio for nine years, until hubby moved the clan to Kentucky. When not chasing the family around, she's at the computer, reading and writing, trying to perfect her craft. She occasionally takes breaks to feed her animal horde, and is trying to control her office-supply addiction, but both tasks are uphill battles. Happily, she is writing full-time now. She always has several projects in the works and loves to hear from readers.

Oh my goodness! I do believe my Kindle is smoking! More likely, it is just J.M. Madden's scorching writing. Phew! A Needful Heart was a hot, yet endearing read. Matt is described as a BIG, strong, tattooed man. I couldn't help but think how yummy he would be, yet intimidating at the same time. Then, you add in the fact that he is a tortured soul and that was it. I melted into a puddle on the floor. What women wouldn't want him in her arms...to...uh...hug and to...uh...console. Gina comes across as a gentle, nice, and easy-going woman. She is somewhat new to the area and she hasn't heard anything about Matt, his father, and their rocky past. However, Matt knows about Gina. It only took one look from afar at a fair and he was hooked. He then spent the next four years seeing her at the doctor's office and trying to muster up the courage to speak to her.

The circumstance in which Matt finally gets his chance to speak to Gina is not ideal and is actually downright unpleasant, but it starts something neither one of them expected. Matt is in disbelief that Gina is so open to spending time with him. Gina finds out that Matt is far from the intimidating (and almost scary) man she avoided getting to know. She is grateful for his help and she surprises herself at just how fast she falls for him.

Gina may not know about Matt's past, but she does know about Gabe, the small boy who lives next door with his abusive guardian. Gina goes out of her way to look out for Gabe and to keep him safe the best she can. This is something that intrigues Matt and, I believe, makes her even more attractive to him. He eventually finds himself emotionally invested in the boy as well.

The attraction between Gina and Matt grows and grows until it's combustible!

I found this novel very refreshing. You'll find all the elements of a romantic and passionate love story but combined in an original way. The plot is very simple but the story carries a heart touching spell that makes it very difficult to put the book down. Matt is a rough man tainted by his past and believes he's not capable to be engaged in a healthy relationship with a woman. Despite that, he can't help to feel compelled toward Gina, which he barely knows. One day, the destiny literally pushes her into him. She realizes how caring and gentle Matt is despite his looks. Matt becomes involved in Gina's life and in that of an orphan she protects from an abusive tutor, and this forces him to overcome the boundaries he's imposed to his heart. The author gives to Matt's character a depth that distinguishes him from the typical male characters of this kind of novel. He's awesome and muscular but is not self-assured or a womanizer, on the contrary he's self-deprecating and gnawed by his insecurities. Matt's struggling against his self-imposed restraints to allow himself to love and to be loved, makes him vivid and believable. In addition, for once we have a woman who doesn't close up against the problems and the attitude of the man she likes, nor does she submit herself to his moods passively, instead she understands his issues and tries to conquer his trust and heart gradually. Definitely a book to enjoy and a real page turner.

I downloaded this book as soon as I saw this free alert earlier...and I made the mistake of opening it at work.
Now I am finished reading it.
ALL OF IT.
And I have to say...this might be one of the VERY best books I can EVER remember reading. I found myself in tears many times as I read Matt's struggle with feeling worthy of being loved and how he opened up under Gina's loving kindness and open heart.
I cannot recommend this story enough. It is just so, SO good that I cannot seem to find the words to really do it justice.

Matt has been bringing his neighbor and friend George to the doctors for his follow up liver transplant visits. Gina works for the office and when they collide, she falls breaking her wrist. Matt, feels horrible and responsible for her injury because he was going to finally break down and talk to her. He's been interested in her for a while but because of things from his past, he doesn't feel he could be the best person for Gina. Gina has other ideas and wants more than just a friendship from him. With a little boy Gabe in the mix, things might just work out differently than either one of them expected.
Not only did the title catch me but the story did as well. It was well written and a cute story of more than one needful heart.

Light and entertaining. Sweet, simple, a bit steamy. The internal dialogues kept the connection with the characters. Textbooks have consumed all my reading hours for three years. Bought myself a Kindle to celebrate graduation and looked for an enjoyable escape. Kept my interest from beginning to end, about a 5-hour read. Similar to a Danielle Steele love story, but considerably shorter. Just what I needed to shift into relaxation mode!

Carpenter Matt Calvin has been infatuated with nurse Gina Carruthers for over four years, but when he finally musters the courage to talk to her, he ends up accidentally knocking her down and breaking her wrist. Gina's broken wrist and another accident (Gina is super clumsy) extends the time that Gina and Matt end up spending together. It isn't long before cheery Gina realizes that there is a strong physical attraction between the two of them, but more importantly, that Matt is a sincerely sweet, kind and talented guy despite his surly manner and intimidating looks.

Most of the tension in the novel stems from Matt's feelings of inadequacy. Severely abused as a child, Matt hasn't really experienced a relationship with a woman and he fears that he shares his father's propensity for violence. Meanwhile, Gina is involved with her young neighbor Gabe and her efforts to protect him from his emotionally abusive uncle puts in her a dangerous spot.

The author seamlessly switches from Gina and Matt's perspectives so the reader really gets to feel Gina's growing attraction and interest and Matt's overwhelming desire and tentative response to Gina's overtures. Gina is an appealing heroine. She is not depicted as extremely beautiful (I did love how Matt seems so enamored of her "frizzy" hair), but she is good-natured, kind and extremely patient and perceptive about Matt's feelings. Matt is an endearing conflicted hero; his huge crush on Gina, his shyness, and his lumberjack look were adorable! I also enjoyed how the relationship unfolded and developed mostly in the context of normal life where characters actually have to go to work and buy groceries.
