Book Description

Growing up can be tough. Especially with a punk-rock radio host for a mom. And without a dad around.
I listen to NPR and imagine how my life would be different if my mother hosted a show for them instead of our community radio station. I never know what she’ll say on the air. She’ll talk about her period, strange dates, weird people at bowling alleys, anything. Everyday I worry she’ll talk about my acne or something personal about me. She’d be more careful about what she says
if she worked for a respectable station. On school days, I set my radio alarm to NPR. The first time she heard the radio click on in the morning, she came to my room and said, “NPR! I knew you’d be rebellious one day, but NPR! You’re fourteen and enjoy NPR. That is so weird.” I could hear her saying “NPR” over and over until her coffee was finally ready. Then she calmed down. Somewhat. If only she knew who was really weird.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story about family and a girl growing up December 19, 2007
Format:Paperback
A New Kind of Music is about a young girl (Layla) that's dealing with the same things other kids her age struggle with. She has to depend on her friends, like her best friend Kristen, and needs them like real kids need their friends. She wants to fit in with them and worries because her mom is on the radio. She talks about wanting a normal life and wonders how her life could be different. She starts to like a boy and has to deal with those kinds of feelings for the first time. Layla also wants to know about her dad because her mom chose to raise Layla by herself. I appreciate reading a story about a family that isn't "traditional" but it works. A New Kind of Music is a fun, warm read with great, strong characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Book That Makes You Think! December 19, 2007
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed this book. In a wierd way, it reminded me of Gilmore Girls because there's this tight group of community friends who all seem to enjoy doing things together. It made me jealous I didn't live in that town.
This is a good book for kids to read because it makes you think about homeless shelters, stray animals, AIDS, and just being a teen.

Oddly enough I did like this book. The mother daughter relationship reminded me of the Gilmore Girls---poignantly amusing. It's definitely a book for animal lovers. Easy, yet pleasurable read.

More About the Author

Diane spends too much time complaining about living in the hot, humid South instead of writing. Yet, somehow, she has been published in hundreds of magazines and journals.
