Book Description

Awareness grows...
     The gathering commences....

The world has changed. Jack Walker and the other survivors must adjust with it if they are to have a chance. They've managed to stay one step ahead so far but the gap is narrowing. The night runners are growing and adapting. The rules are changing.
Winter is coming and the survivors must ready themselves for the long season. With Robert and Bri rescued from captivity, Jack focuses on the days ahead. His mind weighs on ensuring their supplies will see them through and clearing the night runners away from their sanctuary. There are changes in the air that threaten not only the safety of the small band of survivors, but perhaps the entire remnants of mankind.

The deadliest threats
     Are those that build unseen...

From the Author

I wrote this series with one thought in mind - What would I actually do in the event of an apocalyptic event?  This story and series being true to the actual skills and experiences I possess. No super heroes or someone possessing miraculous abilities, just a normal person seeking to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.  Being an ex-Air Force pilot and operating in the special operations arena, the experiences I have gathered lend themselves well to surviving in a world such as I have presented, being advantageous in certain aspects of survival.  Written in the first person, it takes you through an accounting of what that world and survival looks like through the eyes of someone being suddenly thrust into a situation that looks normal from first glance, with regards to the physical environment, but with a terror lurking underneath and survival in question at every turn.  Imagine yourself looking out of your window and everything looks the same; buildings stand tall and straight reflecting sunlight from their exteriors; trees sway in the morning breeze; cars sit silently in parking lots; a bright blue sky looks down and the air clear of smoke from burning fires. Except there is one simple but huge difference, there's nobody around.  The plausibility of the scenario and premise make this a truly unique story and interesting read and I truly hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.  If you enjoyed the story, feel free to leave a review and let me know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book of the series so far July 21, 2012

John O'brien's series "A New World" has been at the top of my fav list since the very first book A New World: Chaos .

With each book, which picks up exactly where the previous book ends, he shows you a world forever changed and the trials and tribulations Jack Walker and the small group of survivors he brings together must face and overcome or adapt to and accept.

This is Book #5. In my opinion, the best book so far. YEAH, it shocked me too. ;) While not as much in the way of blood-n-guts, the back stories on several of the key--or soon to be key---characters helps you feel even more involved than you thought you would be this far into a series.

I was kind of hesitant going into this book. Only because I read in a post of John's that even he was ...uneasy...is what I believe he said about this book. Because of the exact thing that makes me say it's the best so far; the "pre-outbreak" back stories. Don't get me wrong...the action scenes against the night runners, marauders and every body who tried to hurt Jack or his family--extended or blood--was kicka**.

This still has some GOOD action, I just liked learning more of the history of the characters I feel for and hold dear.

*****BTW JOHN...still PI**ED and upset about....you know who...!!***** (I hate spoilers...almost broke my own rule)

I found out this book was being released sometime early..I mean EARLY!..on 7/21..I bought it at 3:02am EST and ended up staying up all night reading. Just finished and I sat down to write this.

EXCELLENT work John **applause**

I just hate that it is going to be a while before we see Book 6 out. I know this had to wear John out..but YOU STARTED IT JOHN!! :D

If you have not read the previous four books PLEASE! do not read this first, you will be totally lost. But every book in this series is really good and worth every penny. You will not be sorry....enjoy

Bk 1...A New World: Chaos
Bk 2...A New World: Return
Bk 3...A New World: Sanctuary
Bk 4...A New World: Taken

"A New World: Awakening" by John O'Brien- Review by Tiff

Night Runner- (n.) Human who has been turned into a primalistic cannibal due to having a flu shot. This human is still alive, but shows ability to take pain and trauma much better than the non-infected human. (S)he has enhanced senses, can communicate telepathically, pale skin and light-sensitive eyes and skin. Much is still unknown about the night runner.

This is the 5th book in the "A New World" series by Mr. John O'Brien. I have read all of them up to this point and am already bugging him for the sixth.

Jack, the main character and narrator, is still busy as hell busting his butt trying to survive, and begin to thrive, in the new world where night is feared. He goes on mission after mission, often with little or no guarantee of any sort of return. The soldiers who have become his extended family helped him when he needed their help- so now he is returning the favor.

O'Brien has made me care deeply about Jack as well as his family. Several of the soldiers have a special place in my heart as well. It's impossible not to care for these people. Yes, they're people... I don't give a damn that it's a fiction book... shut up. The way the book bounces from Jack narrating to other characters telling their side of the same story really enhances the characterization. In the second book I felt that it was a little overdone (shh, don't tell John), but the author has found the perfect balance in this installment.

I noticed either a)there was less military jargon or b)I have gotten more acquainted with it and didn't notice much of it. Not sure. In a review of one of the earlier books in the series I mentioned I felt like I was getting a little "tactical training." Perhaps that is what has occured. Still, O'Brien makes it a point to spell out any military abbreviations so everyone stays on the same page.

If you're on the fence about reading this series just go ahead and jump on over. It really is a great series; it's right between easy-to-read young adult books and the more literary-type apocalypse novels, in my opinion. Great story, believable plot, wonderful characters. Perhaps O'Brien could add an awesome protagonist- other than the night runners of course. Oh, what's that? A little too spoil-y? Ok- shutting up.

Oh, and one last thing; the night runners throw in several surprises of their own. Don't miss out. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book! July 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I cannot begin to express my surprise when I saw the new book from John obrien was available. I IMMEDIATLY purchased it. His series so far has been my absolute favorite in the post apoc genre. Other than Harry Potter, twilight series, and lord of the rings, this series is my absolute favorite. I don't know if John obrien will become as big as those aforementioned books authors but time will only tell. I tell you one thing; this series is just as mind consuming and attention grabbing as the big boys. It's real. It's descriptive. It's smart. It's funny. And it uses all of the toys of the trade that makes things fun.

This new book was great. Moved fast. Promised more to come and kept you on the edge of your seat. The increasing capabilities of the night runners are becoming a very big problem for the survivors of this hell on earth scenario. If you are into post apoc series where the action is more focused on a para military view point then this is the series for you. I tell you, I just don't think I can wait another minute for the next book to come out and this one hasn't even hardly been out for days yet. This series has the makings of a classic, time will only tell. I hope that once jack and his fellow survivors take care of the night runner problem close to home they will take the fight to the other cities and hopefully demolish the night runner problem all together. If I could make some suggestions, I think a scientist needs to be added in the series so the problem can be worked on from that vantage point also. Imagine this, the scientist captures a few night runners, figures out a bio weapon that can kill them and then gives it to jack to start bombing the hell out of the night runners. I think he also needs to introduce some oil refinery workers or people that will be trained to become them. A big part of this book is the dead line of fuel going bad and they are racing against the clock. With the scientist working along with the oil refinery jack will be able to provide a better chance of total victory in this war of attrition. If the author includes these suggestion then City by city his characters can start to take the world back. This series has the stamina to become at least a 15 book series until it is said and done.

In closing, if you want a great adventure. Buy this book!
