Exclusive Q&A with David Gilmour and Nick Mason

Biography

In the early 1960s, a bunch of boys from Cambridge began jamming together, and out of those encounters were born the early incarnations of Pink Floyd. More than 40 years and 150 million album sales later, the band headlined the biggest global music event in history – Live 8 – and was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame. You could say the Floyd has staying power.

Format: Audio CD
"A Nice Pair" is a collection of the first two Pink Floyd albums: "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", and "Saucerful of Secrets". For a long time it was only available on LP and on audiotape. Here it is given new life on cd. The sound is pretty much identical to the two cds out there that you can find in any record store. It copies the two cd releases exactly as far as I can tell (it has the 4 minute version of Astronomy Domine - for those people who might wonder.) Thus, it is different than the American issue of the original LP in America.

There might be some who doubt the quality, because I am still unsure if this cd-reissue is actually a legitimate release or was put together by a third party. However, the quality here is definitely up to par with just about anything released under the Pink Floyd name. It has an outer, cardboard gatefold sleeve broken up into nine small pictures (as the main image shows,) with similar, but different, pictures on the back side.

Inside are early pictures of the band (many of which I had never seen before,) divided up into the same nine square pattern. The two cds sit in their own sleeves and you can sit them loosely inside, or you can even put them (they do fit nicely) inside the open end of the case. The design on the cds themselves is of course psychedelic and all the writing is clear and (almost) mistake free. I see a single typo, it lists the time of the song "Bike" as 3-23 instead of 3:23. However, this is a very minor error, and (to me at least) means nothing. There is also a sleeve that comes with the set that copies the pictures of the main cover and it also fits inside the case with the cds. These all fit relatively nicely so that they aren't sticking out at all.

A fine mini-LP release of the 1973 album featuring The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) and A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). The gatefold album art is first class, including all the ariginal inserts and LP/CD covers as done with the original release of the double LP album which I will likely never let go. This is for collectors because you can purchase each individual release or both as distinct albums. Is this release a fake? I honestly do not believe so. Am I an expert at this sort of thing? Of course not. Are there fakes floating around? Sure. On eBay one can find at least one release being sold from Russia that has one extra track, namely See Emily Play, on The Piper CD. Several web searches yielded nothing that told me anything neither confirming nor verifying the legitimacy of any of these releases. Who is to blame? That's right, the record label and/or original copyright holder of A Nice Pair. If the labels were to due a service to fans, they could very easily officially verify fakes versus legitimate releases. As one would expect, however, their silence on the matter indicates a clear willingness to support the status quo and hope people keep buying whatever, if any, legitimate releases by asmosis. I'm happy with this release and plan to update my review here when I receive the Russian edition I purchased for chuckles and grins.

Meantime, the audio quality of this set is excellent and I discern no difference between the Oh By The Way box versions of the albums and the Discovery editions. I listen on a decent set up: a Denon DVD 3910 Universal disc player connected via Firewire to a Pioneer Elite VSX-59txi.
