Editorial Reviews

Review

“There are Mogul palace ceilings whose countless mirrored convexities at once reduce, multiply, scatter and enchant the figures under their spell. If I may speak for 'America,' it is a privilege to be held in so mercurial, many-faceted a gaze as this poet's, who goes to the heart of my troubles and turns them into bitter honey.” (James Merrill)

Agha Shahid Ali's place as one of the most significant poets of the late twentieth century is assured by the body of work he has left us. This book is an excellent example of the variegated shades of nuance Shahid was capable of producing. We can be grateful for the work he left us: it provides some solace for those of us who were lucky enough to know him.

Good but I was really knocked over by his book, 'The Country Without a Post Office'. Read that one first.
